Vintage Spalding Racquet, Squash Game, Match Play, Round Head Design, Precision Built, 75 285 Japan, Wood & Leather, White w Red, Home Decor

The gorgeous Spalding Match Play "PRECISION BUILT" squash racquet is in great to excellent condition. The accompanying wooden head-press is in very good to great condition. While the underside of the wider frame rail has a personalized "GILLAN" written in pen in the center of the frame, the under or backside of the upper frame rail has "JAPAN" stamped in all caps. The inside edge of the lower part of the head has "75 - 285" to the left of "JAPAN" stamped onto the white and then covered with a clear lacquer-like finish. Hence, it is very likely this particular Spalding squash racquet and accompanying wooden head-press have always been together. However, the "JAPAN" stamp is not the only peculiarly special characteristic concerning this racquet and head-press. The incredibly good condition of the racquet reveals that is has rarely - if ever - been used for actual play. The intact deep-burgundy stripe around the black leather-wrapped handle has a very "unused" appearance. In fact, the surface of the leather still has the pebbled-look very similar to freshly installed leather. However, the consistent symmetry of the wrap at the butt-end of the handle along with the remainder of the tightly-wound handle is very consistent with an original leather-wrapped handle. Even more, this is consistent with the cleanliness of the tight strings and lack of scuff marks on the end of the head. According to references, this particular Spalding squash racquet was produced circa 1960's. The unique logo with the "S" that breaches the outer feathered-like semi-circle is consistent with the time period. Furthermore, the "S" of the logo on the butt-end of this squash racquet matches a nearly mint condition Spalding Roger Maris baseball glove produced in the 1960's. While at first glance it may be difficult to notice, the ends of the "S" are different. The upper end of the "S" is smooth and does not have the tail like that portrayed on the lower part of the letter. In addition, it is important to note that the beautifully layered appearance of the wooden frame of this squash racquet is due to it being made of laminated wood. The laminated wood allows for a much straighter more "true" frame that has a much lesser likelihood of becoming warped in the future. Hence, another reason for the beautifully preserved rich color-palette and surface finish on this gorgeous Spalding Match Play squash racquet.

Please note that screen resolution and/or original lighting could cause the colors to appear lighter or darker than actual. Also, while the particular head of this squash racquet is sometimes referred as a round-head design, the head is not perfectly round - this is to distinguish between other head shapes such as teardrop, dropped, etc.

There are a few very small spots of wear in the actual sheen "lacquer-like" finish of the racquet - approximately half the size of a dime. These small spots are not due to wear from play but more likely due to handling. Other than this, there are no breaks, cracks, chips, or repair places on this gorgeous Spalding Match Play wooden squash racquet. There are some very slight vintage age, wear, and rub marks on the racquet - mainly in the form of slight discoloration due to aging. Even more, the very slight spots of wear are more consistent with handling and/or storage than actual play. Rarely can a racquet be found that does not have some sort of rough spots on the end of the head due to it coming in contact with a wall or court. However, this racquet does not have those scuff marks on the end of the head. Also, while there are some very faint and small wear spots on the leather-wrapped handle, the overall surface of the leather handle still has the "new" pebbled look. In addition, the strings along with their mounting holes are in incredibly fine condition. Along with this, the striped red, black, and clear-like bands are intact.

The wooden head-press has what might appear to be a break on the exterior "bolt-head" side of the wider bottom. However, it is only a shallow (approximately 1/16" thick) surface crack that was most likely part of the original construction. Other than this, there are no breaks, cracks, chips, or repair places on this wooden head-press. There are some vintage wear, age, and distress places on the head-press mainly due to age and/or handling. Also, the unfinished surface of the wooden head-press along with the metal bolts, springs, and wing-nuts have some slight patina developing due to age and/or handling. In addition, the under or backside of the wider end has "GILLAN" written in pen in the center of the frame rail.

The decorative possibilities for this beautiful Spalding Match Play "PRECISION BUILT" wooden squash racquet are many. The display case or collectibles shelf would be enhanced by the addition of this stunning 1960's round-head design squash racquet. Also, the feature wall would welcome this wonderfully aged and barely worn squash racquet for its rich red, black, and off-white to white trim along with its slender laminated wooden body. In addition, the growing collection of sports memorabilia would increase in value and interest upon the arrival of this Spalding Match Play squash racquet and accompanying head-press.

The collector will appreciate this gorgeous Spalding Match Play wooden squash racquet for its great to excellent condition, burgundy-striped black leather-wrapped handle, rich red, black, and slightly aged white to off-white trim, aesthetically attractive round-head design, high-quality "PRECISION BUILT" craftsmanship, accompanying wooden head-press, and beautiful overall appearance.

The collectible Spalding Match Play squash racquet along with the accompanying wooden head-press weighs approximately 22 oz.

The gorgeous Spalding Match Play squash racquet alone weighs approximately 10 oz.

The Spalding Match Play wooden squash racquet measures approximately 27 1/16" in length from tip to tip x 8 5/16" wide across the head from outside to outside x 1 3/8" thick at the butt of the handle and 9/16" thick at the head.

The butt of the handle measures approximately 1 9/16" wide in diameter across from outside to outside.

The opening/surface area of the nearly-round head measures approximately 7 5/16" across from inside to inside x 8 1/8" tall from inside to inside.

The entire shaft/handle section measures approximately 17.75" in length from the butt-end of the handle to where the white neck section meets the outer edge of the round-head section.

The barely-worn burgundy-striped black leather-wrapped handle section measures approximately 6.75" in length.

The slightly distressed adjustable wooden head-press measures approximately 10 9/16" in the length from outside to outside x 11 1/8" wide on the longer end x 6" wide on the shorter end.

The threaded shanks of the metal screws measure approximately 2.5".

***Note on Measurements: All measurements are taken and described as close as possible. Where only an approximate measurement is available we will put approximately in the listing.

***Our Measurements for clothing are taken with the garment laying flat with closures fastened - zippers are zipped and buttons buttoned.

***The Bust measurement is obtained by measuring across the flat chest of the garment from armpit to armpit and then multiplying that number by two. To get the chest measurement simply divide the Bust by two.

***We clean our vintage inventory of surface dirt and dust before we list it on our site. We would not want to receive something dirty so we are not going to send our customers something with original dust or dirt. Therefore, after shipping we generally recommend all items be cleaned before use. This is not always because they are considered unclean but simply to make you aware of the possibility of needing to be cleaned after shipping and handling. This does three things: (1) It helps you know your item, (2) It helps you ensure your item is clean according to your standards, and (3) It removes any dust or grime that may have come from the shipping and delivery process.

***Unless noted in the description, we normally do not polish or repaint our inventory as many of our customers prefer the vintage patina look over a new painted or polished appearance.

***Please pay close attention to the pictures as they may show more than I may be able to explain.

***Please note that sometimes we enhance our pictures for sharpness and clarity.

***We aim to be good stewards of our planet; therefore, we may use or reuse boxes and/or packing that are clean and ship worthy.

***The year of production or year-it-was-made is an estimate based on experience, similar items, and/or appearance.

***Textiles and Fabrics such as linens, tapestries, clothing, tablecloths, or simple craft materials may be wrinkled or have lines upon arrival as they are folded for shipping. It is recommended they be laid out or hung up.

***As is common with pre-owned items they could have little marks that are not so easily detectable - we refer to these as vintage wear and rub marks. While I do personally inspect each item, I can miss small marks that may not show up with regular inside light. That being said, I try to be very picky and careful to make sure the details are explained truthfully, honestly, and upfront.

***Virtually all pre-owned items have vintage wear and rub marks. This is simply a term that we have coined to point out that because: (1) they are older, (2) most likely they are not in their original plastic, wrapping, or packaging, (3) have been stored, (4) transported, (5) and handled - they are very likely to have little, small, or slight discolorations, marks, places, wear, etc. Hence, this is why we often have longer descriptions. We try very hard to make sure you know what we know.
