The distressed and rustic tube-frame steel contractors wheelbarrow is in good condition. Even though it has a small hole in the front left of the tray (top section), this gorgeously distressed and rustic wheelbarrow could be put back to work hauling heavy loads. However, it is being offered in this listing as a decorative collectible. The eight-spoke wheel on the front has been oiled and roles very nicely. According to references, the Chattanooga Wheelbarrow and Truck Company most likely produced this wheelbarrow sometime in the early 1900’s. The design of this particular wheelbarrow was called a 143T with a three-yard bucket. While there are no discernible identification marks to help further narrow down an approximate production date, the particular design of the bent tube-frame running from the end of one handle around the front and back to the end of the other handle along with the dual support arms in the front are consistent with wheelbarrows produced in the Art-Deco era - circa 1920's. Another important design feature that is very consistent with the Art-Deco era can be seen in the beautiful stance of this wheelbarrow. Unlike some Mid-Century designs where the rise from the back to the front is much steeper, the gradual rise from the back to the front on this wheelbarrow is much less acute and remarkably similar to the aerodynamic lines found on many exotic cars of the 1930's such as Bugatti, Duesenberg, Rolls Royce, Auburn, etc. However, it is important to point out that it is highly unlikely the maker of this wheelbarrow went to a world renown auto show just to copy the aerodynamic lines of exotic automobiles for this wheelbarrow. In contrast, the gradual-rise design resulting in the beautifully flowing lines in the stance of this wheelbarrow reveal the overall mindset of the Art-Deco culture. In other words, the impact of the Art-Deco era on the culture that was just coming out of the blocky Model T 1910's was so life-altering that forward-thinking optimism simply became the norm for the then "new" manufacturing endeavors. In addition to its wonderfully attractive aesthetic appearance, this wheelbarrow was almost certainly made for more than simply hauling cabbage heads out of the garden. In fact similarly designed trays were advertised in catalogs of that time as holding up to four cubic feet. Even more, the approximate size of the tray with its low-profile design placed directly over the solid eight-spoke wheel and supported by the strong one-piece bent tube-frame provide evidence that points to the fact that this wheelbarrow was offered as a contractors model that was most likely designed to primarily haul heavier easier-to-dump contents - likely concrete. Furthermore, the small hole in the tray along with the pitting in the metal is very consistent with the characteristic wear resulting from hauling concrete. Hence, this gorgeously distressed and rustic wheelbarrow not only has beautiful Art-Deco inspired aerodynamics, but it also has an incredible early twentieth-century industrial charm.
Please note that screen resolution and/or original lighting could cause the colors to appear lighter or darker than actual.
As previously mentioned, there is a small line-like hole near the front left corner of the tray (see photos). Also, there are some small dents and dings in the tray. Other than this, there are no breaks, cracks, or repair places on this Art-Deco era steel contractors wheelbarrow. There are some vintage wear, age, and rub marks on the wheelbarrow - mainly in the form rustic distress and pitting. Also, while the the eight-spoke wheel has some slack around the bearing, it has been oiled and roles quite nicely. In addition, there are areas of discoloration on the wheelbarrow - mainly in a light gray to off-white color. It is important to note that the shinier sheen on the wheelbarrow is due to it being sprayed down with WD-40. After a thorough cleaning, the wheelbarrow was given time to completely dry. Afterwards, in order to prevent surface rust from popping up, WD-40 was applied over the entirety of the wheelbarrow. After a few days, the WD-40 along with its sheen lose the wet-look and simply help to keep rust away.
The decorative possibilities for this gorgeously distressed and rustic steel contractors wheelbarrow are many. The man-cave or den would be enhanced by the addition of this beautiful Art-Deco inspired contractors wheelbarrow. Also, the home-office or sunroom would welcome this old wheelbarrow for its attractive aesthetics and early twentieth-century industrial charm. In addition, the growing collection of old machinery and/or tools would increase in value and interest upon the arrival of this distressed and rustic steel contractors wheelbarrow.
The collector will appreciate this old steel contractors wheelbarrow for its good condition, distressed and rustic character, Art-Deco inspired aerodynamics, early twentieth-century industrial charm, and gorgeous overall appearance.

***Note on Measurements: All measurements are taken and described as close as possible. Where only an approximate measurement is available we will put approximately in the listing.
***Our Measurements for clothing are taken with the garment laying flat with closures fastened - zippers are zipped and buttons buttoned.
***The Bust measurement is obtained by measuring across the flat chest of the garment from armpit to armpit and then multiplying that number by two. To get the chest measurement simply divide the Bust by two.
***We clean our vintage inventory of surface dirt and dust before we list it on our site. We would not want to receive something dirty so we are not going to send our customers something with original dust or dirt. Therefore, after shipping we generally recommend all items be cleaned before use. This is not always because they are considered unclean but simply to make you aware of the possibility of needing to be cleaned after shipping and handling. This does three things: (1) It helps you know your item, (2) It helps you ensure your item is clean according to your standards, and (3) It removes any dust or grime that may have come from the shipping and delivery process.
***Unless noted in the description, we normally do not polish or repaint our inventory as many of our customers prefer the vintage patina look over a new painted or polished appearance.
***Please pay close attention to the pictures as they may show more than I may be able to explain.
***Please note that sometimes we enhance our pictures for sharpness and clarity.
***We aim to be good stewards of our planet; therefore, we may use or reuse boxes and/or packing that are clean and ship worthy.
***The year of production or year-it-was-made is an estimate based on experience, similar items, and/or appearance.
***Textiles and Fabrics such as linens, tapestries, clothing, tablecloths, or simple craft materials may be wrinkled or have lines upon arrival as they are folded for shipping. It is recommended they be laid out or hung up.
***As is common with pre-owned items they could have little marks that are not so easily detectable - we refer to these as vintage wear and rub marks. While I do personally inspect each item, I can miss small marks that may not show up with regular inside light. That being said, I try to be very picky and careful to make sure the details are explained truthfully, honestly, and upfront.
***Virtually all pre-owned items have vintage wear and rub marks. This is simply a term that we have coined to point out that because: (1) they are older, (2) most likely they are not in their original plastic, wrapping, or packaging, (3) have been stored, (4) transported, (5) and handled - they are very likely to have little, small, or slight discolorations, marks, places, wear, etc. Hence, this is why we often have longer descriptions. We try very hard to make sure you know what we know.
