The collectible Michigan-style single-bit Anniversary felling axehead is in decent to good condition. Even though the blade has lost its sharp "felling" edge, the blade could be sharpened and used to "fell" or cut down trees after a quality handle was installed. However, in this listing it is being offered as a decorative collectible due to its gorgeously distressed and worn character features. While at first glance it may not be noticeable in the photos, the incredibly attractive aesthetic appeal along with the collectible nature of this old steel axehead is directly related to the amount of obvious wear on its flat hammer-head end. When it was originally formed, the hammer-head end measured approximately 1" thick. However, this Anniversary axehead was depended upon so extensively during its lifetime that it now measures approximately 1 3/8" thick. In other words, the incredibly hard flat steel surface came in contact with another object so many times and under such great force that it now has what essentially could be described as "an inward wrinkle". While this listing refers to the end opposite the blade as the "hammer-head" end for location purposes, this axehead was not designed with "hammering" in mind. According to references, the straighter top and bottom with the curved outside blade-edge reveals this particular axehead was designed for felling trees. In addition to its gorgeously distressed and worn character features, it is important to note that the "ANNIVERSARY" stamped into the side of the axehead most likely hearkens back to circa 1929. According to references, the George Worthington Company started in 1829, when a young man named George Worthington came to Cleveland, Ohio from New York. Soon after his arrival, the 16-year-old George Worthington noticed the lack of proper tools during the construction of the Ohio & Eerie Canal. Seeing the opportunity, Mr. Worthington returned to New York, bought picks, shovels and other tools and had them shipped back to Cleveland. Even though there are no discernible dates on this Anniversary axehead, references note that the 100th anniversary of the George Worthington Company was an incredibly important milestone for both the company and the city of Cleveland too because it was the oldest company in the city. Hence, it is very likely the "ANNIVERSARY" stamped into the steel of this axehead provides very good evidence that it was produced to commemorate that momentous - circa 1929 - occasion.
Please note that screen resolution and/or original lighting could cause the colors to appear lighter or darker than actual. Also, the Chap-Stick in the photos is not included in this listing as it was used for scale purposes only.
There are some very small chips on the Anniversary axehead - mainly on the edges and hammer-head end. Also, as previously mentioned, there is noticeable and obvious wear from use on this collectible Anniversary axehead - mainly in the form of an "inward wrinkle" on the hammer-head end. Other than this, there are no breaks, cracks, or repair places on this collectible Anniversary axehead. There are some vintage wear, age, and rub marks on the axehead - mainly in the form of distress and wear. Also, the aged and worn steel has a pitted surface with a rusty rustic-like patina. While the axehead was cleaned with soap and steel wool to remove obvious surface-rust, there are areas on the axehead where the heavier corrosion would have required a much harsher method of cleaning. However, a harsher method would almost certainly remove its incredibly attractive patina. In addition, the outer cutting edge is dull. Hence, the blade would need sharpening before being put to work.
The decorative possibilities for this collectible Michigan-style single-bit Anniversary felling axehead are many. The display case or open collectibles shelf would be enhanced by the addition of this gorgeously distressed and worn Anniversary axehead. Also, the accent table or home-office desk would welcome this circa 1929 Anniversary axehead for its incredibly attractive aesthetic appeal and inwardly-wrinkled head pointing to the important role this axehead has filled along with the incredible force it has delivered over its near century-long lifespan. In addition, the growing collection of old tools would increase in value and interest upon the arrival of this gorgeously distressed and worn Michigan-style single-bit Anniversary felling axehead.
The collector will appreciate this aesthetically attractive Michigan-style single-bit felling axehead for its decent to good condition, distressed and worn character features, "ANNIVERSARY" stamp most likely commemorating in 1929 the 100th anniversary of the oldest company in Cleveland, Ohio, curved "felling" shaped blade edge, "inwardly-wrinkled" end pointing to the important role this axehead once played, impressive Industrial Americana charm, and gorgeous overall appearance.
The collectible Michigan-style single-bit Anniversary felling axehead weighs approximately 55 oz.
The gorgeously distressed and worn single-bit Anniversary felling axehead measures approximately 7" in length x 3.25" tall in the back and 4 3/8" tall at the blade x 1 5/16" thick in the back.

***Note on Measurements: All measurements are taken and described as close as possible. Where only an approximate measurement is available we will put approximately in the listing.
***Our Measurements for clothing are taken with the garment laying flat with closures fastened - zippers are zipped and buttons buttoned.
***The Bust measurement is obtained by measuring across the flat chest of the garment from armpit to armpit and then multiplying that number by two. To get the chest measurement simply divide the Bust by two.
***We clean our vintage inventory of surface dirt and dust before we list it on our site. We would not want to receive something dirty so we are not going to send our customers something with original dust or dirt. Therefore, after shipping we generally recommend all items be cleaned before use. This is not always because they are considered unclean but simply to make you aware of the possibility of needing to be cleaned after shipping and handling. This does three things: (1) It helps you know your item, (2) It helps you ensure your item is clean according to your standards, and (3) It removes any dust or grime that may have come from the shipping and delivery process.
***Unless noted in the description, we normally do not polish or repaint our inventory as many of our customers prefer the vintage patina look over a new painted or polished appearance.
***Please pay close attention to the pictures as they may show more than I may be able to explain.
***Please note that sometimes we enhance our pictures for sharpness and clarity.
***We aim to be good stewards of our planet; therefore, we may use or reuse boxes and/or packing that are clean and ship worthy.
***The year of production or year-it-was-made is an estimate based on experience, similar items, and/or appearance.
***Textiles and Fabrics such as linens, tapestries, clothing, tablecloths, or simple craft materials may be wrinkled or have lines upon arrival as they are folded for shipping. It is recommended they be laid out or hung up.
***As is common with pre-owned items they could have little marks that are not so easily detectable - we refer to these as vintage wear and rub marks. While I do personally inspect each item, I can miss small marks that may not show up with regular inside light. That being said, I try to be very picky and careful to make sure the details are explained truthfully, honestly, and upfront.
***Virtually all pre-owned items have vintage wear and rub marks. This is simply a term that we have coined to point out that because: (1) they are older, (2) most likely they are not in their original plastic, wrapping, or packaging, (3) have been stored, (4) transported, (5) and handled - they are very likely to have little, small, or slight discolorations, marks, places, wear, etc. Hence, this is why we often have longer descriptions. We try very hard to make sure you know what we know.
