The collectible 1957 twenty-volume Collier's Encyclopedia set is in good to very good condition. The pebbled black covers with their dark red and gold colored accents are not only aesthetically attractive, but this particular color palette portrays a boldly confident Mid-Century Modern charm. While there is some distress and age on the covers and page edges, many of the actual pages are so clean that they have an unopened appearance. The front information shows that this twenty-volume set includes the Bibliography and Index. Also, the front information shows this encyclopedia set to have a copyright date of 1957. The FOREWORD in the front of volume one shows that this highly detailed set of Collier's Encyclopedia was at that time the first "entirely new major adult encyclopedia...published" in approximately thirty years. The approximately fourteen-million words that make up this broad and concise encyclopedia set were provided by over two-thousand scholarly contributors from "all branches of learning and leaders in all walks of life". Along with this, it is important to point out the great effort put into providing as much objective information within the pages of this encyclopedia set as possible as the "associate and departmental editors had therefore to exercise the greatest care to catch and delete any biased opinion which crept into the copy and to see that an impartial presentation of the facts was made". In addition to its incredibly detailed content, the publishers went to great lengths "to make Collier's Encyclopedia the best illustrated of all encyclopedias". Along with "entirely new four-color maps" from the cartographers at the Rand McNally Company, there are also color and black and white photos from "picture sources all over the world". Concerning the addition of color plates the FOREWORD says, "One authority has assured us that, from an anatomical standpoint, they are the most accurate paintings of animals and birds ever to appear in an encyclopedia".

Please note that screen resolution and/or original lighting could cause the colors to appear lighter or darker than actual. Also, while the red may appear somewhat brighter due to the lighting in the photos, the color is actually closer to dark-red.

While we did not look through every page of every volume, there does not appear to be any missing pages. There are some areas of distress and age on the covers, spines, and page edges. There is also some discoloration due to age and most likely storage/transport wear. Other than this, there are no breaks, loose sections, or repair places on this gorgeous 1957 twenty-volume Collier's Encyclopedia set. There are some vintage wear, age, and rub marks on the volumes in this set - mainly in the form of distress and age. Also, while we did not check every page in every volume, there does not appear to be any pencil or pen marks inside the volumes that make up this encyclopedia set. In addition, there are some areas of discoloration that are mainly on the pages and/or the page edges. As previously mentioned, many of the actual pages are so clean that they have an unopened appearance. While it is sometimes common for older books - especially those in multi-volume sets - to have an aged odor, the odor with this set is much more faint than might be expected.

The decorative possibilities for this collectible 1957 twenty-volume Collier's Encyclopedia set are many. The study or living room would be enhanced by the addition of this gorgeous pebbled-black with dark-red and gold twenty-volume encyclopedia set. Also, the sturdy display case or open collectibles shelf would welcome this aesthetically attractive, incredibly concise, and wonderfully illustrated Collier's Encyclopedia set for its boldly confident Mid-Century Modern charm. In addition, the growing book collection would increase in value and interest upon the arrival of this 1957 twenty-volume Collier's Encyclopedia set.

The collector will appreciate this gorgeous 1957 twenty-volume Collier's Encyclopedia set for its good to very good condition, aesthetically attractive color palette, incredibly concise and wonderfully illustrated content, boldly confident Mid-Century Modern charm, and beautiful overall appearance.

The collectible 1957 twenty-volume Colliers Encyclopedia set weighs approximately 85 lbs.

Each volume of this collectible Collier's Encyclopedia set measures approximately 10 7/8" tall x 8.5" wide x 1 3/8" thick - with some volumes being slightly more or slightly less thick due to varying content.

***Note on Measurements: All measurements are taken and described as close as possible. Where only an approximate measurement is available we will put approximately in the listing.

***Our Measurements for clothing are taken with the garment laying flat with closures fastened - zippers are zipped and buttons buttoned.

***The Bust measurement is obtained by measuring across the flat chest of the garment from armpit to armpit and then multiplying that number by two. To get the chest measurement simply divide the Bust by two.

***We clean our vintage inventory of surface dirt and dust before we list it on our site. We would not want to receive something dirty so we are not going to send our customers something with original dust or dirt. Therefore, after shipping we generally recommend all items be cleaned before use. This is not always because they are considered unclean but simply to make you aware of the possibility of needing to be cleaned after shipping and handling. This does three things: (1) It helps you know your item, (2) It helps you ensure your item is clean according to your standards, and (3) It removes any dust or grime that may have come from the shipping and delivery process.

***Unless noted in the description, we normally do not polish or repaint our inventory as many of our customers prefer the vintage patina look over a new painted or polished appearance.

***Please pay close attention to the pictures as they may show more than I may be able to explain.

***Please note that sometimes we enhance our pictures for sharpness and clarity.

***We aim to be good stewards of our planet; therefore, we may use or reuse boxes and/or packing that are clean and ship worthy.

***The year of production or year-it-was-made is an estimate based on experience, similar items, and/or appearance.

***Textiles and Fabrics such as linens, tapestries, clothing, tablecloths, or simple craft materials may be wrinkled or have lines upon arrival as they are folded for shipping. It is recommended they be laid out or hung up.

***As is common with pre-owned items they could have little marks that are not so easily detectable - we refer to these as vintage wear and rub marks. While I do personally inspect each item, I can miss small marks that may not show up with regular inside light. That being said, I try to be very picky and careful to make sure the details are explained truthfully, honestly, and upfront.

***Virtually all pre-owned items have vintage wear and rub marks. This is simply a term that we have coined to point out that because: (1) they are older, (2) most likely they are not in their original plastic, wrapping, or packaging, (3) have been stored, (4) transported, (5) and handled - they are very likely to have little, small, or slight discolorations, marks, places, wear, etc. Hence, this is why we often have longer descriptions. We try very hard to make sure you know what we know.
