The beautifully distressed red and golden-brown primitive "SILVER" No. 40 George Worthington Company wash board is in very good condition. One side has "SILVER" with "THE GEO. WORTHINGTON CO." in the center of the advertising section and "CLEVELAND OHIO" just below. The metal washboard on the "SILVER" side is not only grooved but it also has ridges that make an interesting zig-zag pattern. The opposite side has a large bubble-like font "NO - 40" in the advertising section. However, this is no ordinary "NO - 40" - they appear to be hand-drawn. While this is quite obvious with the "N" and "O", the number 40 is a little harder to notice. However, the distance between the spaces of the inner and outer lines of the top compared to the bottom of the "0" give it away. But, not only was the "NO - 40" hand-drawn but the "NO" and the "40" appear to have been done by two different hands. Apparently the curvy lines of the "NO" did not pass muster so a more experienced and steady hand was brought in for the "40". Even more, since one other George Worthington "NO - 40" washboard appears to have a very similar font style, it is highly likely this was an earlier stencil used on some of their earliest washboards. The metal washboard section under the "NO-40" has diagonal grooves with parallel - instead of zig-zag - ridges. Another interesting and important feature on this particular washboard can be seen in the way the top ledge is joined with the sides. The joints where the top and sides meet are referred to as "Dovetail" joints - that appear to have been cut by hand. According to references, "Genuine hand made dovetails...were the standard of good furniture craftsmanship until about 1870" when the pin and cove style joint would become much more popular. Also, under magnification the round-looking nail heads are obviously out-of round. While the shanks are hidden, the nail heads appear to be consistent with late 19th century hand-forged nails. These important details along with the fact that The George Worthington Company began in 1829 point to a circa 1870 production date for this particular "SILVER" No. 40 washboard. While this washboard was almost certainly not produced with its current color, the red appears to be very old. While it is nearly impossible to see with the naked eye, under magnification the tops of some of the ridges on the metal washboard have a beautiful rustic patina which is indicative of age and wear.
Please note that screen resolution and/or original lighting could cause the colors to be lighter or darker than actual. Also, there is metal wall-hanging wire already installed with each end of the wire attached to a screw-in metal loop near the top of each side.
There are no breaks, cracks, chips, or repair places on this gorgeous wooden washboard. There are some vintage wear, age, and rub marks on the washboard - mainly in the form of rub marks and distress due. As previously mentioned, there is a very slight rustic patina developing on the metal washboard - mainly on the ridges. Also, there are some spots of color on the washboard - mainly located on the "SILVER" side in yellow and faint white. In addition, while the washboard has been lightly cleaned with mild soap and water, there are some small remnants of dust and/or lint in the groove where the metal goes into the wood.
The decorative possibilities for this primitive wood and metal "SILVER" No. 40 George Worthington Company wall-hanging washboard are many. The entryway or living area would be enhanced by the addition of this beautifully distressed red and golden-brown wood and metal washboard. Also, the laundry-room or bath area would welcome this washboard for its attractive primitive farmhouse charm. The larger size of this wash board makes it perfect for a decorative centerpiece. Also, the very-magnetic ribbed-metal would make a great family communication and/or Post-It note message board. In addition, the growing collection of older advertising would increase in value and interest upon the arrival of this "SILVER" No. 40 George Worthington Company wood and metal washboard.
The collector will appreciate this "SILVER" No. 40 wood and metal George Worthington Company wall-hanging washboard for its very good condition, beautifully distressed red and golden-brown color, larger size, incredibly rare double hand-drawn bubble-like "NO - 40" font, apparently older age, attractive primitive-farmhouse charm, and gorgeous overall appearance.
The beautifully distressed red and golden-brown primitive "SILVER" No. 40 George Worthington Company washboard weighs approximately 32.0 oz.
The primitive wood and metal Silver No. 40 washboard measures approximately 24" tall x 12.5" wide x 1 7/8" deep.

***Note on Measurements: All measurements are taken and described as close as possible. Where only an approximate measurement is available we will put approximately in the listing.
***Our Measurements for clothing are taken with the garment laying flat with closures fastened - zippers are zipped and buttons buttoned.
***The Bust measurement is obtained by measuring across the flat chest of the garment from armpit to armpit and then multiplying that number by two. To get the chest measurement simply divide the Bust by two.
***We clean our vintage inventory of surface dirt and dust before we list it on our site. We would not want to receive something dirty so we are not going to send our customers something with original dust or dirt. Therefore, after shipping we generally recommend all items be cleaned before use. This is not always because they are considered unclean but simply to make you aware of the possibility of needing to be cleaned after shipping and handling. This does three things: (1) It helps you know your item, (2) It helps you ensure your item is clean according to your standards, and (3) It removes any dust or grime that may have come from the shipping and delivery process.
***Unless noted in the description, we normally do not polish or repaint our inventory as many of our customers prefer the vintage patina look over a new painted or polished appearance.
***Please pay close attention to the pictures as they may show more than I may be able to explain.
***Please note that sometimes we enhance our pictures for sharpness and clarity.
***We aim to be good stewards of our planet; therefore, we may use or reuse boxes and/or packing that are clean and ship worthy.
***The year of production or year-it-was-made is an estimate based on experience, similar items, and/or appearance.
***Textiles and Fabrics such as linens, tapestries, clothing, tablecloths, or simple craft materials may be wrinkled or have lines upon arrival as they are folded for shipping. It is recommended they be laid out or hung up.
***As is common with pre-owned items they could have little marks that are not so easily detectable - we refer to these as vintage wear and rub marks. While I do personally inspect each item, I can miss small marks that may not show up with regular inside light. That being said, I try to be very picky and careful to make sure the details are explained truthfully, honestly, and upfront.
***Virtually all pre-owned items have vintage wear and rub marks. This is simply a term that we have coined to point out that because: (1) they are older, (2) most likely they are not in their original plastic, wrapping, or packaging, (3) have been stored, (4) transported, (5) and handled - they are very likely to have little, small, or slight discolorations, marks, places, wear, etc. Hence, this is why we often have longer descriptions. We try very hard to make sure you know what we know.
