The gorgeous heavily-constructed log cabin style wooden box is in very good to great condition. While there are no discernible marks of identification on this incredibly well-built wooden box, the 1" x 5/8" red oak slabs that make up the exterior walls are evidence that this box was built to last more than a lifetime. Furthermore, it is very unlikely that a box like this one would ever be made anywhere other than a master woodworker's shop. Along with the realistic log cabin appearance of the heavily constructed sides, the black oxide surrounding the metal nail heads on the wood slat roof give evidence that much older nails were used to further enhance the authentic colonial-frontier charm. While this box is most likely not an antique, the woodworker purposely used nails that were most likely made during a time when hand-forging was the normal method of making steel fasteners - circa mid to late nineteenth-century. The heavily constructed lid opens on two somewhat larger brass hinges that are anchored in place by four screws per hinge. While the photos show the lid standing open on its own above the lower section, the heavy lid could use some type of safety chain to keep it from falling backward and possibly stressing the hinges. Tying in the four sides and adding even more sturdiness to this heavily constructed wooden box is a paneled wood bottom held in place with small metal nails. In addition, while the maker went to great lengths to give this gorgeous box such an incredibly realistic appearance, time and wear have also provided a beautifully aged and distressed character to the unfinished and worn surface of the wood.
Please note that screen resolution and/or original lighting could cause the colors to appear lighter or darker than actual. Also, the Chap Stick in the photos is not included with this listing as it was used for scale purposes only. In addition, this is not a box for a little child. Even if they eventually begin to open it, they risk mashing a finger or hand.
The top of the little chimney along with the edges of some of the slats on the roof have a chipped, broken, and/or worn appearance - mainly near the right corner of the hinge side. Other than this, there are no breaks, cracks, water damages, or repair places on this gorgeous heavily-constructed log cabin style wooden box. There are some vintage wear, age, and rub marks on the box - mainly in the form of age and distress. While the box has been lightly cleaned with mild soap and water and quickly dried to remove any dust particles that might have been blending in with the color of the wood, there could still be some small places that were overlooked that may need a tad-bit of rubbing off. Having said that, this box is clean enough for the kitchen table. The brass hinges along with their screws are fully intact and in great working condition. As previously mentioned, it might be preferable to add a safety chain to the hinged lid. Also, depending on the location where the box will be stored and/or displayed, the raw wood bottom could use some small rubber bumpers to keep it above and help protect surfaces.
The decorative possibilities for this gorgeous log cabin style wooden box are many. The entryway or bedroom area would be enhanced by the addition of this wonderfully-attractive and heavily-constructed wooden box. Also, the man-cave, home-office, or study would welcome this log cabin style wooden box for its realistic look and colonial-frontier charm. In addition, the growing collection of old boxes would increase in value and interest upon the arrival of this stunning log cabin style wooden storage box.
The collector will appreciate this gorgeous log cabin style wooden box for its very good to great condition, aged and distressed character, heavy construction, realistic look, authentic colonial-frontier charm, and beautiful overall appearance.
The gorgeous heavily-constructed log cabin style wooden box weighs approximately 106 oz.
The log cabin style wooden keepsake box/hope chest measures approximately 8 7/8" tall to the top of the chimney or 8.25" tall to the center of the roof x 12" wide including the wooden fireplace on the end or 11.75" wide box only from outside to outside x 9 7/8" deep from outside of overhang to outside of overhang or 8 3/8" deep box only from outside to outside.
The interior of the box measures approximately 5" tall x 9.75" wide from inside to inside x 6.5" deep from inside to inside.
The sides of the box measures approximately 6.5" tall to the top of the overhang.
Nearly all of the solid oak pieces that make up the logs measures approximately 1" tall x 5/8" deep x 11 5/8 in length - some may vary a little in length.

***Note on Measurements: All measurements are taken and described as close as possible. Where only an approximate measurement is available we will put approximately in the listing.
***Our Measurements for clothing are taken with the garment laying flat with closures fastened - zippers are zipped and buttons buttoned.
***The Bust measurement is obtained by measuring across the flat chest of the garment from armpit to armpit and then multiplying that number by two. To get the chest measurement simply divide the Bust by two.
***We clean our vintage inventory of surface dirt and dust before we list it on our site. We would not want to receive something dirty so we are not going to send our customers something with original dust or dirt. Therefore, after shipping we generally recommend all items be cleaned before use. This is not always because they are considered unclean but simply to make you aware of the possibility of needing to be cleaned after shipping and handling. This does three things: (1) It helps you know your item, (2) It helps you ensure your item is clean according to your standards, and (3) It removes any dust or grime that may have come from the shipping and delivery process.
***Unless noted in the description, we normally do not polish or repaint our inventory as many of our customers prefer the vintage patina look over a new painted or polished appearance.
***Please pay close attention to the pictures as they may show more than I may be able to explain.
***Please note that sometimes we enhance our pictures for sharpness and clarity.
***We aim to be good stewards of our planet; therefore, we may use or reuse boxes and/or packing that are clean and ship worthy.
***The year of production or year-it-was-made is an estimate based on experience, similar items, and/or appearance.
***Textiles and Fabrics such as linens, tapestries, clothing, tablecloths, or simple craft materials may be wrinkled or have lines upon arrival as they are folded for shipping. It is recommended they be laid out or hung up.
***As is common with pre-owned items they could have little marks that are not so easily detectable - we refer to these as vintage wear and rub marks. While I do personally inspect each item, I can miss small marks that may not show up with regular inside light. That being said, I try to be very picky and careful to make sure the details are explained truthfully, honestly, and upfront.
***Virtually all pre-owned items have vintage wear and rub marks. This is simply a term that we have coined to point out that because: (1) they are older, (2) most likely they are not in their original plastic, wrapping, or packaging, (3) have been stored, (4) transported, (5) and handled - they are very likely to have little, small, or slight discolorations, marks, places, wear, etc. Hence, this is why we often have longer descriptions. We try very hard to make sure you know what we know.
