The rustic and distressed Marble safety-axe/hatchet is in poor to good condition. While the blade could be sharpened and the hatchet put to work, it is being offered in this listing as a decorative collectible. The only thing left where the original handle was once attached - besides the frame - is a single straight-head brass screw. According to references, this was referred to as a safety-axe mainly because of an arm that would cover the front of the blade. While the part of the arm that covers the blade on this safety-axe is missing, there are some slightly discernible marks on the lower end of the arm. On the lower end of the arm that swings upward there is an identification mark on the side that appears to say, "Marble Safety Axe Co.". While at first glance the hatchet appears to be made from cast iron, the distressed silver appearance on the surface of the head seems to lean more in the direction of cast steel. However, the pitted and distressed appearance on this hatchet is consistent with a cutting tool with a very much older age - dating back possibly to the turn of the twentieth-century. The reason this is noted is due to the fact that the hatchet appears to have been hand-forged and also because the Marble Safety Axe Company was supposedly in existence during that time. Besides some inconsistencies near the edges, the head of the hatchet has a slight lean toward the right that is mainly noticeable when looking down the spine. Also, there is a small pin in one side of the collar area of the head where it meets the handle. In addition, there is a ground down area on the top of the head that is most likely from the handle and head being joined together.
Please note that screen resolution and/or original lighting could cause the colors to appear lighter or darker than actual. Also, the hatchet has been quite thoroughly washed with soap, steel-wool, and water. After drying, the hatchet was wiped down with something similar to gun oil to protect against future rust. While in the photos the hatchet has a semi-wet appearance, over time the wet-look will dry.
As previously noted, part of the arm that swings upward to cover the front of the blade is missing. From its appearance, the end of the arm was actually cut off. Other than this, there are no loose sections on this rustic and distressed Marble safety-axe/hatchet. There are some vintage wear, age, and rub marks on the hatchet - mainly in the form of rustic distress and pitting on the surface. Also, there is some wear on the blade that would most likely come out with a fresh sharpening.
The decorative possibilities for this rustic and distressed collectible Marble safety-axe/hatchet are many. The display case or open collectibles shelf would be enhanced by the addition of this aged all-steel frame Marble safety-axe. Also, the man-cave or study would welcome this interesting hatchet for its apparently older age and primitive rustic charm. In addition, the growing collection of old tools would increase in value and interest upon the arrival of this all-steel frame Marble safety-axe/hatchet.
The collector will appreciate this rustic and distressed Marble safety-axe for its poor to good condition, apparently older age, and primitive rustic charm.
The rustic and distressed Marble safety-axe/hatchet measures approximately 10 13/16" in length x 3 7/8" wide from the back of the head to the edge of the blade x 11/16" thick at the end of the handle.
The head measures approximately 2.25" tall at the blade and 1 9/16" tall where it meets the handle.
The area where the inlaid-handle was once located measures approximately 4 5/8" in length x 1 1/8" wide at the butt end.

***Note on Measurements: All measurements are taken and described as close as possible. Where only an approximate measurement is available we will put approximately in the listing.
***Our Measurements for clothing are taken with the garment laying flat with closures fastened - zippers are zipped and buttons buttoned.
***The Bust measurement is obtained by measuring across the flat chest of the garment from armpit to armpit and then multiplying that number by two. To get the chest measurement simply divide the Bust by two.
***We clean our vintage inventory of surface dirt and dust before we list it on our site. We would not want to receive something dirty so we are not going to send our customers something with original dust or dirt. Therefore, after shipping we generally recommend all items be cleaned before use. This is not always because they are considered unclean but simply to make you aware of the possibility of needing to be cleaned after shipping and handling. This does three things: (1) It helps you know your item, (2) It helps you ensure your item is clean according to your standards, and (3) It removes any dust or grime that may have come from the shipping and delivery process.
***Unless noted in the description, we normally do not polish or repaint our inventory as many of our customers prefer the vintage patina look over a new painted or polished appearance.
***Please pay close attention to the pictures as they may show more than I may be able to explain.
***Please note that sometimes we enhance our pictures for sharpness and clarity.
***We aim to be good stewards of our planet; therefore, we may use or reuse boxes and/or packing that are clean and ship worthy.
***The year of production or year-it-was-made is an estimate based on experience, similar items, and/or appearance.
***Textiles and Fabrics such as linens, tapestries, clothing, tablecloths, or simple craft materials may be wrinkled or have lines upon arrival as they are folded for shipping. It is recommended they be laid out or hung up.
***As is common with pre-owned items they could have little marks that are not so easily detectable - we refer to these as vintage wear and rub marks. While I do personally inspect each item, I can miss small marks that may not show up with regular inside light. That being said, I try to be very picky and careful to make sure the details are explained truthfully, honestly, and upfront.
***Virtually all pre-owned items have vintage wear and rub marks. This is simply a term that we have coined to point out that because: (1) they are older, (2) most likely they are not in their original plastic, wrapping, or packaging, (3) have been stored, (4) transported, (5) and handled - they are very likely to have little, small, or slight discolorations, marks, places, wear, etc. Hence, this is why we often have longer descriptions. We try very hard to make sure you know what we know.
