The primitive Southwestern folk-art doll chair is in very good condition. While it is possible this chair was originally made for a small child, it is being offered here as a decorative collectible doll chair. Also, this is a very unique and rare wooden chair due to the seemingly odd combination of color tones. The faint mustard-yellow wash over the reddish cedar-looking wood is incredibly rich and attractive. In addition to its wonderful aesthetic appeal, the chair is very well built. The round mortise and tenon joint on each end of the carved wooden spindles join the front and back together. To keep them in place, nails were added at every joint. While the nails look somewhat normal from a distance, up close their mottled heads are consistent with hand-forged cast iron nails. Given the presence of black oxide that has leached out into the wood surrounding each head, it is highly likely that this chair dates back to the turn of the twentieth-century. Even more, the painted Southwestern folk-art flowers along with the material making up the denim seat does not fluoresce under a black-light. Hence, the gorgeously painted flowers and rustic distressed denim most likely date to sometime prior to the early 1930's. However, the black-light test did reveal that at some point modern thread was used to tighten-up and securely fasten the woven denim seat. While it is difficult to know if the chair was originally made with the woven denim seat, the appearance of older material that does not fluoresce is indicative of older denim.
Please note that screen resolution and/or original lighting could cause the colors to appear lighter or darker than actual.
As can be seen in some of the photos, there are cracks in the wood due to aging - mainly in the form of small surface cracks. Also, while the chair is incredibly strong as far as weight bearing, the aging wood has a tendency to move a little when put under stress. Other than this, there are no major cracks or broken areas on the chair. There are some vintage wear, age, and rub marks on the chair - mainly in the form of distress and age on the wood. Also, while the denim has a distressed and rustic appearance, this is most likely from the wash used on the chair as opposed to dirt because the color is consistent on the bottom as well as the top.
The decorative possibilities for this primitive Southwestern folk-art doll chair are many. The open collectibles shelf or corner accent table would be enhanced by the addition of this incredibly rich and attractive doll chair. Also, the entryway or dining room would welcome this beautiful little chair for its rare color tone and primitive Southwestern folk-art charm. In addition, the growing folk-art collection would increase in value and interest upon the arrival of this primitive folk-art doll chair.
The collector will appreciate this primitive wooden doll chair for its very good condition, hand-forged cast iron nails, rare color tone, woven denim seat, primitive Southwestern folk-art charm, and incredibly attractive overall appearance.

***Note on Measurements: All measurements are taken and described as close as possible. Where only an approximate measurement is available we will put approximately in the listing.
***Our Measurements for clothing are taken with the garment laying flat with closures fastened - zippers are zipped and buttons buttoned.
***The Bust measurement is obtained by measuring across the flat chest of the garment from armpit to armpit and then multiplying that number by two. To get the chest measurement simply divide the Bust by two.
***We clean our vintage inventory of surface dirt and dust before we list it on our site. We would not want to receive something dirty so we are not going to send our customers something with original dust or dirt. Therefore, after shipping we generally recommend all items be cleaned before use. This is not always because they are considered unclean but simply to make you aware of the possibility of needing to be cleaned after shipping and handling. This does three things: (1) It helps you know your item, (2) It helps you ensure your item is clean according to your standards, and (3) It removes any dust or grime that may have come from the shipping and delivery process.
***Unless noted in the description, we normally do not polish or repaint our inventory as many of our customers prefer the vintage patina look over a new painted or polished appearance.
***Please pay close attention to the pictures as they may show more than I may be able to explain.
***Please note that sometimes we enhance our pictures for sharpness and clarity.
***We aim to be good stewards of our planet; therefore, we may use or reuse boxes and/or packing that are clean and ship worthy.
***The year of production or year-it-was-made is an estimate based on experience, similar items, and/or appearance.
***Textiles and Fabrics such as linens, tapestries, clothing, tablecloths, or simple craft materials may be wrinkled or have lines upon arrival as they are folded for shipping. It is recommended they be laid out or hung up.
***As is common with pre-owned items they could have little marks that are not so easily detectable - we refer to these as vintage wear and rub marks. While I do personally inspect each item, I can miss small marks that may not show up with regular inside light. That being said, I try to be very picky and careful to make sure the details are explained truthfully, honestly, and upfront.
***Virtually all pre-owned items have vintage wear and rub marks. This is simply a term that we have coined to point out that because: (1) they are older, (2) most likely they are not in their original plastic, wrapping, or packaging, (3) have been stored, (4) transported, (5) and handled - they are very likely to have little, small, or slight discolorations, marks, places, wear, etc. Hence, this is why we often have longer descriptions. We try very hard to make sure you know what we know.
