Antique Dazey Churn, Butter Jar, Embossed Glass, 4 Quarts, Square Bottom, Rustic Iron, Primitive Tool, Kitchen Decor, Wood Paddles

The collectible four-quart Dazey butter churn is in very good to great condition. The top rustic-iron gear mechanism appears to be in great working condition and will turn in either direction - forward or reverse. The larger four-quart capacity of this gorgeous Dazey butter churn is embossed on the side of the glass as "4 QUARTS". This particular four-quart Dazey butter churn does not have the embossed circle on the front that says, "Dazey Churn & Mfg Co". According to references, while not all were marked, some Dazey butter churns have embossed information on the side. Even more, one of the signs pointing toward a reproduction is the lack of correct (or any information) in the embossing on the front. However, references that provide comparisons for original vs. reproduction glass note that other important features to look for on original Dazey glass jars include deeper threads, level rim, imperfections in the glass, and a circular area in the glass of the base. The unmarked lower glass section in this listing has all of those features. While there is a circular mark on the bottom, it is important to note that it is somewhat larger than some of those cross referenced. Another distinct feature that reproductions are supposedly missing is the embossed information on the base of the jar. At first glance, this glass jar does not appear to have any embossed letters or numbers on its base. However, upon closer inspection there is at least one obvious character in and through the outer edge of the bottom scar. The character appears to be a letter "S" or a number "2". Also, there are very faint remnants of another character (possibly two) that have been stretched by the finishing of the glass. Hence, the finishing of the glass base during production caused the bottom scar to be abnormally larger than originally intended. Finally, the lower ledge around the bottom where the sides meet the base on this particular glass jar is consistent with original Dazey glass. Hence, the lack of a patent date and other embossed information may be due to the fact that this particular four-quart Dazey butter churn had an earlier production date. Even though the company started in 1906, the patent would not be issued until February 14th, 1922.

The top rustic-iron gear mechanism is definitely an original Dazey. The wooden turn knob is held on by a driven pin/rivet instead of a screw commonly found on reproductions. Even more significant is the "40" embossed in three locations on the gear mechanism. The backside of the handle has "40 H" in the metal. One of the spokes of the gear has "40" on one side with a "G" just across the center on the other. The last "40" is located on the vertical shaft housing. In addition to the embossed "40" on the top mechanism, there are two additional features commonly found on original Dazey butter churns. While some references note that on rare occasion Dazey would use Pine, Maple was the preferred wood that Dazey used to make the wooden paddles. The four-bladed wooden paddle on this churn - sometimes called a "Dasher Blade" - appears to be Maple. Finally, the underside of the top gear mechanism of reproductions have aluminum fasteners that are non-magnetic. However, the metal that Dazey used on the underside of their original gear mechanisms were very magnetic. After testing the underside of the Dazey butter churn in this listing, the very magnetic metal provides further evidence for the authenticity of this original Dazey gear mechanism.

Please note that screen resolution and/or original lighting could cause the colors to appear lighter or darker than actual. Also, there is a link to a video of this collectible Dazey butter churn below the measurements.

There is a very shallow coarse surface area on the inside of the rim that is most likely a surface chip that is so small it might need a finger to detect. While it is possible the little area was overlooked when the final finishing of the rim was being done, it is not likely due to the incredible smoothness and detail around the rest of the rim. Other than this, there are no breaks, cracks, chips, or repair places on this gorgeous Dazey butter churn. There are some vintage wear, age, and rub marks on the churn - mainly on the bottom where it has come in contact with different surfaces. However, they are hardly noticeable to the naked eye. Also, the upper iron metal housing has a beautiful rustic and worn patina with remnants of the original silver-gray color. The small wooden turn-knob is fully intact with short stress cracks near its base. All of the teeth on the gears are intact. There are some very minor signs of wear on some of the teeth which could be due to the aging of the metal as much as wear from being used. Amazingly, the four wooden blades on the churn are fully intact with a couple of the blades having small hairline-like cracks near their bottoms. As previously mentioned, the wooden turn-knob turns the churn in both directions - forward and reverse. While it has not been lubricated, the gears may need lubrication and/or adjustment before being turned upon arrival.

The decorative possibilities for this gorgeous Dazey butter-churn are many. The china cabinet or display curio would be enhanced by the addition of this rustic primitive kitchen tool. Also, the open collectibles shelf or bookcase would welcome this rare Dazey butter churn for its primitive country charm. In addition, the growing tool collection would increase in value and interest upon the arrival of this early production four-quart Dazey butter churn.

The collector will appreciate this gorgeous Dazey butter churn for its very good to great condition, likely earlier "pre-patent" production date, rustic and worn patina, primitive country charm, and beautiful overall appearance.

The gorgeous four-quart Dazey butter churn weighs 90.8 oz.

The large four-quart Dazey butter churn measures 14.25" tall to the top of the metal gear housing or 9.25" tall to the top of the round rim on the square-shaped jar.

The square glass jar measures approximately 5 5/8" wide across from outside to outside.

The square footed base of the lower glass section measures approximately 5 1/8" wide across from outside to outside.

The rim measures approximately 5" wide across from outside to outside with an inner opening measurement of approximately 4 11/16" across from inside to inside.

***Note on Measurements: All measurements are taken and described as close as possible. Where only an approximate measurement is available we will put approximately in the listing.

***Our Measurements for clothing are taken with the garment laying flat with closures fastened - zippers are zipped and buttons buttoned.

***The Bust measurement is obtained by measuring across the flat chest of the garment from armpit to armpit and then multiplying that number by two. To get the chest measurement simply divide the Bust by two.

***We clean our vintage inventory of surface dirt and dust before we list it on our site. We would not want to receive something dirty so we are not going to send our customers something with original dust or dirt. Therefore, after shipping we generally recommend all items be cleaned before use. This is not always because they are considered unclean but simply to make you aware of the possibility of needing to be cleaned after shipping and handling. This does three things: (1) It helps you know your item, (2) It helps you ensure your item is clean according to your standards, and (3) It removes any dust or grime that may have come from the shipping and delivery process.

***Unless noted in the description, we normally do not polish or repaint our inventory as many of our customers prefer the vintage patina look over a new painted or polished appearance.

***Please pay close attention to the pictures as they may show more than I may be able to explain.

***Please note that sometimes we enhance our pictures for sharpness and clarity.

***We aim to be good stewards of our planet; therefore, we may use or reuse boxes and/or packing that are clean and ship worthy.

***The year of production or year-it-was-made is an estimate based on experience, similar items, and/or appearance.

***Textiles and Fabrics such as linens, tapestries, clothing, tablecloths, or simple craft materials may be wrinkled or have lines upon arrival as they are folded for shipping. It is recommended they be laid out or hung up.

***As is common with pre-owned items they could have little marks that are not so easily detectable - we refer to these as vintage wear and rub marks. While I do personally inspect each item, I can miss small marks that may not show up with regular inside light. That being said, I try to be very picky and careful to make sure the details are explained truthfully, honestly, and upfront.

***Virtually all pre-owned items have vintage wear and rub marks. This is simply a term that we have coined to point out that because: (1) they are older, (2) most likely they are not in their original plastic, wrapping, or packaging, (3) have been stored, (4) transported, (5) and handled - they are very likely to have little, small, or slight discolorations, marks, places, wear, etc. Hence, this is why we often have longer descriptions. We try very hard to make sure you know what we know.
