The distressed and aged wooden geometrical-theme easel is in good condition. While it is hard to be certain, the actual wood under the aged and distressed charcoal gray and black surface appears to be walnut. The incredible patina over the finish of the wood is simply stunning. The black tone is so prominent that the darker sections appear to have a charred color. The same dark tone can also be seen around the holes of the metal fasteners in the wood. According to references, one of the primary indicators for forged iron nails has to do with the color of the wood surrounding the head of the nail. Hand-forged iron nails supposedly have a lower amount of carbon. The lower amount of carbon causes a black crust-like covering to form over the actual nail. However, unlike reddish rust that actually causes the metal to decay much more quickly, the black covering can act as a preservative for the metal. Over time the black color leaches out into the surrounding wood causing a blackish appearance around the head of the fastener. The area around the larger screw near the top along with the surfaces surrounding the other nails in this distressed and aged wooden easel have the same blackish appearance. While there appears to be some later nails that were added to sturdy up the easel, the black tone indicates that this easel was assembled during a time when hand-forged iron fasteners would have been used. In addition to the black oxidation pointing toward hand-forged iron fasteners, the inconsistency in the heads of most of the fasteners reveal they were not made by a machine. Therefore, while its hard to be for certain, this geometrical-theme easel was most likely made between the 1830 and 1900.
Also, there are a number of carved accents on this distressed and aged wooden easel. Among the most obvious can be found at the top of each of the front legs. A "V" has been carved into the top of the two legs. Moving downward, there is a fan-shaped accent carved into each leg on both the right and left of the brace that holds the supporting third leg. Also, there are two square accents touching point-to-point carved into the center of the lower brace. When comparing the rounded top of a fan with a corner of a square, there does not appear to be a consistent theme. However, there are two shapes located in the center section of the easel that correspond with each individual set of accents. In the center near the top there is a rounded section that is attached to the top brace. The curved or rounded upper section matches the top of the rounded fan-accents. The square accents carved into the lower brace are located just below an upside-down "V" shape. Even more, the top of the upside-down "V" shape is situated directly above the point where the two carved square accents touch. While there may or may not be any significant meaning behind it, the intersecting lines and rounded tops point in the direction of a geometrical theme.
Please note that screen resolution and/or original lighting could cause the colors to appear lighter or darker than actual. Also, given the apparent age of this easel, it might not be able to support much weight. Hence, this easel is being offered in this listing as a decorative wooden accent.
As can be seen in the photos, this gorgeously distressed and aged easel appears to be very old. While the fasteners are in place and holding the easel together, there is evidence of shrinkage in the wood - mainly where the center braces meet the outer legs. The brace that supports the top of the rear leg has slack between the joints because when the rear leg extends backward the brace swivels with the leg. In addition to some shrinkage in the wood, there are some sections of the easel that have some play. While play might be considered synonymous with "loose", the better term to use would be "slack". Looseness points more in the direction of something eventually coming apart - sooner than later. Whereas, the term "slack" describes an item that is still together but certainly shows signs of age and wear. Also, the lower brace appears to be a little higher on one end than on the other. While it is hard to be for certain, this is most likely due to the easel coming apart at some point in the past. Instead of using the same hole to reattach the brace to the leg, a new hole had to be used a little higher up so that the nail would hold.
The decorative possibilities for this gorgeously distressed and aged geometrical-theme wooden easel are many. The entryway or living area would welcome this gray and black distressed wooden accent. Also, the open wall of a man-cave, she-shed, or lodge would welcome this distressed and aged easel as a primitive geometrical-theme wall hanging. In addition, the growing collection of antiques would increase in value and interest upon the arrival of this nineteenth-century wooden treasure.
The collector will appreciate this gorgeously distressed and aged wooden easel for its good condition, incredible gray and black patina, geometrical-theme, evidence of older age, and primitive nineteenth-century charm.
The distressed and aged wooden geometrical-theme easel weighs approximately 35 oz.
In the standing position, the distressed wooden geometrical-theme easel stands 46.25" tall with a depth measuring approximately 13.75" from the front edge of the shelf to the back of the rear leg.
When laying down, the distressed carved wooden easel measures approximately 47.75" in length from end to end x 10.25" wide across the carved ends at the top from outside to outside x 15.25" wide across the lower brace from outside to outside or 19.25" wide across the shelf from outside to outside x 17 5/16" wide across the bottom of the legs from outside to outside x 4 15/16" deep from the front edge of the shelf to the backside of the easel or 4 3/16" deep from the front edge of the shelf back to the front side of the legs.

***Note on Measurements: All measurements are taken and described as close as possible. Where only an approximate measurement is available we will put approximately in the listing.
***Our Measurements for clothing are taken with the garment laying flat with closures fastened - zippers are zipped and buttons buttoned.
***The Bust measurement is obtained by measuring across the flat chest of the garment from armpit to armpit and then multiplying that number by two. To get the chest measurement simply divide the Bust by two.
***We clean our vintage inventory of surface dirt and dust before we list it on our site. We would not want to receive something dirty so we are not going to send our customers something with original dust or dirt. Therefore, after shipping we generally recommend all items be cleaned before use. This is not always because they are considered unclean but simply to make you aware of the possibility of needing to be cleaned after shipping and handling. This does three things: (1) It helps you know your item, (2) It helps you ensure your item is clean according to your standards, and (3) It removes any dust or grime that may have come from the shipping and delivery process.
***Unless noted in the description, we normally do not polish or repaint our inventory as many of our customers prefer the vintage patina look over a new painted or polished appearance.
***Please pay close attention to the pictures as they may show more than I may be able to explain.
***Please note that sometimes we enhance our pictures for sharpness and clarity.
***We aim to be good stewards of our planet; therefore, we may use or reuse boxes and/or packing that are clean and ship worthy.
***The year of production or year-it-was-made is an estimate based on experience, similar items, and/or appearance.
***Textiles and Fabrics such as linens, tapestries, clothing, tablecloths, or simple craft materials may be wrinkled or have lines upon arrival as they are folded for shipping. It is recommended they be laid out or hung up.
***As is common with pre-owned items they could have little marks that are not so easily detectable - we refer to these as vintage wear and rub marks. While I do personally inspect each item, I can miss small marks that may not show up with regular inside light. That being said, I try to be very picky and careful to make sure the details are explained truthfully, honestly, and upfront.
***Virtually all pre-owned items have vintage wear and rub marks. This is simply a term that we have coined to point out that because: (1) they are older, (2) most likely they are not in their original plastic, wrapping, or packaging, (3) have been stored, (4) transported, (5) and handled - they are very likely to have little, small, or slight discolorations, marks, places, wear, etc. Hence, this is why we often have longer descriptions. We try very hard to make sure you know what we know.
