The collectible hardback 1964 first-edition book entitled "Michelangelo The Painter" is in very good to great condition. The included original dust-jacket is in good to very good condition. While the book was printed and bound in Japan, it was published by Harry N. Abrams, Inc. of New York. According to references, Michelangelo was one of - if not - the greatest artist of the Italian Renaissance period. The information in the front section reveals that this book was commissioned to commemorate the fourth centennial of the death of Michelangelo. Also, the inside of the dust-jacket states, "The great Sistine Chapel is shown more fully than it has ever been in one volume". There are five chapters of text provided by Professor Valerio Mariani who at the time was with the University of Naples. While many books on art simply include pictures/copies of the works without much - if any - chronology and/or interpretations of those same works, Professor Valerio Mariani not only provides Chronology and Interpretations for the works included in "Michelangelo The Painter" but he also includes a Bibliography to help for further investigation. Hence, this is a very important book for both the lover of art and student alike. Along with this, Professor Valerio Mariani includes full-page illustrations - some in color - to further enrich one's appreciation of the great Italian artist - Michelangelo.
Please note that screen resolution and/or original lighting could cause the color to appear lighter or darker than actual. Also, please note that there are links to two photos of the "Contents" section. While the text in the photos may be smaller - the information is there except for two works just below "The Last Judgment" near the bottom of the second photo. The two works are "The Conversion of Saint Paul" and "The Crucifixion of Saint Peter" along with a "details" section for each.
As previously mentioned, the original dust-jacket is only in good to very good condition. While the overall appearance of the dust-jacket looks very good, there is a tear on the back at the top of the dust-jacket. Also, there are areas of wear and/or faint discoloration on the dust-jacket that are mainly due to handling and/or transport. This is a large and heavy hardback book.
There are some "binding" wear or small breakage between the pages where they meet at the spine. This is a common occurrence in books that are opened too far as it causes stress at the meeting point between the two pages - see fifth photo. The pages are not fully separated and are located mainly near the middle of the book. Furthermore, while such stress can be a common occurrence when virtually any book is placed under duress, it is practically expected when dealing with thicker bindings - not to mention the weight and rigidity of this gorgeous hardback book. The size of this book is such that it should not be placed flat down and opened to the point that the two covers lay flat on the same plane. Hence, a book cradle or display stand should be used to hold and peruse the book - whether carefully or quickly.
Other than these places, there are no tears, water damages, loose sections, or repair places on this collectible 1964 hardback first-edition book. There are some vintage wear, age, and rub marks on the book - mainly in the form of slight distress and wear on the edges and corners. While we did not inspect every single page, there does not appear to be any pencil, pen, or highlighter marks on or inside the book. There are some slight rub marks on the outer page edges. Also, there are some faint areas of discoloration in the book - that are mainly due to the handling of the front pages.
The decorative possibilities for this large collectible “Michelangelo The Painter” book are many. The entryway or study area would be enhanced by the addition of this large and gorgeous hardback Michelangelo book. Also, the living area or home office would appreciate this collectible book not only for its large appearance, but its artistic and cultural significance too. In addition, the growing collection of old books would increase in value and interest upon the arrival of this gorgeous 1964 “Michelangelo The Painter” hardback book.
The collector will appreciate this beautifully detailed 1964 hardback art book for its very good to great condition, incredibly detailed contents, and gorgeous overall appearance.
The thick and heavy 1964 collectible hardback "Michelangelo The Painter" book weighs 145.7 oz.
The collectible hardback 1964 first edition book entitled "Michelangelo The Painter" measures 14 1/8" tall x 10.5" wide x 2.25" thick.

***Note on Measurements: All measurements are taken and described as close as possible. Where only an approximate measurement is available we will put approximately in the listing.
***Our Measurements for clothing are taken with the garment laying flat with closures fastened - zippers are zipped and buttons buttoned.
***The Bust measurement is obtained by measuring across the flat chest of the garment from armpit to armpit and then multiplying that number by two. To get the chest measurement simply divide the Bust by two.
***We clean our vintage inventory of surface dirt and dust before we list it on our site. We would not want to receive something dirty so we are not going to send our customers something with original dust or dirt. Therefore, after shipping we generally recommend all items be cleaned before use. This is not always because they are considered unclean but simply to make you aware of the possibility of needing to be cleaned after shipping and handling. This does three things: (1) It helps you know your item, (2) It helps you ensure your item is clean according to your standards, and (3) It removes any dust or grime that may have come from the shipping and delivery process.
***Unless noted in the description, we normally do not polish or repaint our inventory as many of our customers prefer the vintage patina look over a new painted or polished appearance.
***Please pay close attention to the pictures as they may show more than I may be able to explain.
***Please note that sometimes we enhance our pictures for sharpness and clarity.
***We aim to be good stewards of our planet; therefore, we may use or reuse boxes and/or packing that are clean and ship worthy.
***The year of production or year-it-was-made is an estimate based on experience, similar items, and/or appearance.
***Textiles and Fabrics such as linens, tapestries, clothing, tablecloths, or simple craft materials may be wrinkled or have lines upon arrival as they are folded for shipping. It is recommended they be laid out or hung up.
***As is common with pre-owned items they could have little marks that are not so easily detectable - we refer to these as vintage wear and rub marks. While I do personally inspect each item, I can miss small marks that may not show up with regular inside light. That being said, I try to be very picky and careful to make sure the details are explained truthfully, honestly, and upfront.
***Virtually all pre-owned items have vintage wear and rub marks. This is simply a term that we have coined to point out that because: (1) they are older, (2) most likely they are not in their original plastic, wrapping, or packaging, (3) have been stored, (4) transported, (5) and handled - they are very likely to have little, small, or slight discolorations, marks, places, wear, etc. Hence, this is why we often have longer descriptions. We try very hard to make sure you know what we know.
