The woven bamboo and rattan gathering basket is in great condition. The distressed and aged brown and gold appearance of this gorgeous gathering basket gives it both a primitive and tropical-coastal charm. The slightly shiny look of the basket appears to be from its aged clear shellac that was once applied over the raw wood material. While it is hard to be for sure about the age of this beautiful woven-wood basket, the solid bent-wood handle with its aging rattan-like wrap is a good indicator that it was made sometime during the early 20th century. Also, the simple "gathering" design reveals that this basket was made to use on the farm or in the field. The actual appearance of the wood is consistent with bamboo and rattan. The horizontal bamboo strips are attached to a bamboo frame that turns under the bottom of the basket. The solid bent-wood handle has what appears to be a rattan wrap that ties into a much smaller bamboo weave. The bamboo sides along with the concave bottom make this a surprisingly strong gathering basket. While it is virtually impossible to push against the bottom and sides of this gorgeous gathering basket, compared to country farmhouse splint-style baskets - this basket is several times stronger. Splint-style baskets have more flex in the bottom and/or sides as opposed to this basket having virtually none. Another great feature in the design of this basket which further points to its purposeful design, are the small nails used in attaching each end of the solid wooden handle.
There are some places where the ends of the woven material are sticking out and/or have broken off. However, this is consistent with woven-wood items - especially items woven with bamboo. While the handle has a little back and forth movement, it is firmly intact and well-secured. The rattan-wrap on the handle is a little loose at the top. While it is possible to at least partially glue it back in place, the ends of the rattan wrap have aged to the point that they might break if forced to bend to the diameter of the solid wood inner handle. Furthermore, unless the wrap is purposely removed from the solid wooden handle, it is not going anywhere. Other than this there are no breaks, loose sections, rotten areas, and/or bad odors. There are some vintage wear, age, and rub marks on the basket. The basket has an obvious distressed and aged appearance. The basket appears to be very clean. There does not appear to be any piles of dust, debris, and/or lint. However, there could be some little areas of dust in between the woven strips that are not so easily detectable.
The decorative possibilities for this gorgeous woven-wood gathering basket are many. The entryway or living area would be enhanced by the addition of this gorgeous wooden gathering basket. Also, the corner accent table or wall-shelf would welcome this primitive gathering basket for its distressed and aged appearance. In addition, the growing basket collection would increase in value and interest upon the arrival of this well-constructed bamboo and rattan gathering basket.
The collector will appreciate this distressed and aged wooden gathering basket for its great condition, strong sturdy design, and overall clean appearance.
The woven bamboo and rattan gathering basket weighs 15.7 oz.
The gorgeously distressed and aged primitive farm basket measures 16" tall to the top of the handle x approximately 14 5/8" wide from outside of handle to outside of handle x approximately 11" deep in girth from front to back.
The rim measures 11 3/8" wide from outside to outside x 9.75" deep from front to back from outside to outside.
The sides measures 6.5" tall to the top of the rim.

***Note on Measurements: All measurements are taken and described as close as possible. Where only an approximate measurement is available we will put approximately in the listing.
***Our Measurements for clothing are taken with the garment laying flat with closures fastened - zippers are zipped and buttons buttoned.
***The Bust measurement is obtained by measuring across the flat chest of the garment from armpit to armpit and then multiplying that number by two. To get the chest measurement simply divide the Bust by two.
***We clean our vintage inventory of surface dirt and dust before we list it on our site. We would not want to receive something dirty so we are not going to send our customers something with original dust or dirt. Therefore, after shipping we generally recommend all items be cleaned before use. This is not always because they are considered unclean but simply to make you aware of the possibility of needing to be cleaned after shipping and handling. This does three things: (1) It helps you know your item, (2) It helps you ensure your item is clean according to your standards, and (3) It removes any dust or grime that may have come from the shipping and delivery process.
***Unless noted in the description, we normally do not polish or repaint our inventory as many of our customers prefer the vintage patina look over a new painted or polished appearance.
***Please pay close attention to the pictures as they may show more than I may be able to explain.
***Please note that sometimes we enhance our pictures for sharpness and clarity.
***We aim to be good stewards of our planet; therefore, we may use or reuse boxes and/or packing that are clean and ship worthy.
***The year of production or year-it-was-made is an estimate based on experience, similar items, and/or appearance.
***Textiles and Fabrics such as linens, tapestries, clothing, tablecloths, or simple craft materials may be wrinkled or have lines upon arrival as they are folded for shipping. It is recommended they be laid out or hung up.
***As is common with pre-owned items they could have little marks that are not so easily detectable - we refer to these as vintage wear and rub marks. While I do personally inspect each item, I can miss small marks that may not show up with regular inside light. That being said, I try to be very picky and careful to make sure the details are explained truthfully, honestly, and upfront.
***Virtually all pre-owned items have vintage wear and rub marks. This is simply a term that we have coined to point out that because: (1) they are older, (2) most likely they are not in their original plastic, wrapping, or packaging, (3) have been stored, (4) transported, (5) and handled - they are very likely to have little, small, or slight discolorations, marks, places, wear, etc. Hence, this is why we often have longer descriptions. We try very hard to make sure you know what we know.
