The awesome petroliana collectible folding-knife and leather sheath are in very good to great condition. This is a three-pin lockback knife with wooden handles, brass ends, and a stainless-steel blade. The blade has been used. While there are some marks on the blade that could indicate it has been sharpened, they could simply be due to cutting. The gorgeous greenish patina on the brass ends of this petroliana advertising collectible only adds to its vintage charm. Also, the gorgeous genuine wooden handles give this knife a very warm and comfortable appearance. In addition, the tooled-leather sheath has a gorgeous buckeye-theme on the front.
The Santmyer Oil Company of Ashland (Ohio) was started in 1952. According to references, Ashland is the location for one of their bulk plants. This knife was simply used as an advertising piece - most likely as a gift to employees and/or customers. This knife would almost certainly not have been available to the public - adding to its collectible nature.
There are no breaks, cracks, chips, loose parts, or repair places on this collectible folding lockback knife or its leather sheath. There are some vintage wear, age, and rub marks on the knife - mainly in the form of marks on the blade due to cutting. The tip of the blade has what appears to be an ever-so-slight bend that is super hard to notice unless the end of the tip is rubbed over with a finger. The blade closes slightly closer to one side but still closes. The lockback mechanism is in great working condition. The greenish aged patina on the brass could be polished away if so desired. The genuine wooden handles are fully intact. The front handle appears to have more brown finish than the handle on the back side. However, it is possible that the rear handle was somehow left unstained - especially if this knife was originally meant for display purposes only. There are some vintage wear, age, and rub marks on the leather sheath - mainly in the form of rub places on the exterior. The brass snap-button closure is in great working condition.
The decorative opportunities for this gorgeous petroliana advertising collectible are many. The display case or open collectibles' shelf would be enhanced by the addition of this beautiful brass and wood folding lockback knife. Also, the living area wall would welcome this awesome petroliana advertising collectible for its beautifully aged appearance. The knife and leather sheath could be placed inside a velvety red shadow box and kept safe behind a glass cover which could then be hung on a wall. In addition, the growing petroliana, advertising, and/or cutlery collection would increase in value and interest upon the arrival of this collectible Santmyer Oil Company advertising piece.
The collector will appreciate this gorgeous Santmyer Oil Company folding knife for its very good to great condition, petroliana advertising emphasis, and rich vintage appearance.

If a shipping cost cannot be populated outside of the United States it is possible that the item is too big to be shipped or it is listed for local pickup only. ***Note on Measurements: All measurements are taken and described as close as possible. Where only an approximate measurement is available we will put approximately in the listing.
***Our Measurements for clothing are taken with the garment laying flat with closures fastened - zippers are zipped and buttons buttoned.
***The Bust measurement is obtained by measuring across the flat chest of the garment from armpit to armpit and then multiplying that number by two. To get the chest measurement simply divide the Bust by two.
***We clean our vintage inventory of surface dirt and dust before we list it on our site. We would not want to receive something dirty so we are not going to send our customers something with original dust or dirt. Therefore, after shipping we generally recommend all items be cleaned before use. This is not always because they are considered unclean but simply to make you aware of the possibility of needing to be cleaned after shipping and handling. This does three things: (1) It helps you know your item, (2) It helps you ensure your item is clean according to your standards, and (3) It removes any dust or grime that may have come from the shipping and delivery process.
***Unless noted in the description, we normally do not polish or repaint our inventory as many of our customers prefer the vintage patina look over a new painted or polished appearance.
***Please pay close attention to the pictures as they may show more than I may be able to explain.
***Please note that sometimes we enhance our pictures for sharpness and clarity.
***We aim to be good stewards of our planet; therefore, we may use or reuse boxes and/or packing that are clean and ship worthy.
***The year of production or year-it-was-made is an estimate based on experience, similar items, and/or appearance.
***Textiles and Fabrics such as linens, tapestries, clothing, tablecloths, or simple craft materials may be wrinkled or have lines upon arrival as they are folded for shipping. It is recommended they be laid out or hung up.
***As is common with pre-owned items they could have little marks that are not so easily detectable - we refer to these as vintage wear and rub marks. While I do personally inspect each item, I can miss small marks that may not show up with regular inside light. That being said, I try to be very picky and careful to make sure the details are explained truthfully, honestly, and upfront.
***Virtually all pre-owned items have vintage wear and rub marks. This is simply a term that we have coined to point out that because: (1) they are older, (2) most likely they are not in their original plastic, wrapping, or packaging, (3) have been stored, (4) transported, (5) and handled - they are very likely to have little, small, or slight discolorations, marks, places, wear, etc. Hence, this is why we often have longer descriptions. We try very hard to make sure you know what we know.
