The gorgeous distressed and rustic 1920's "Insured Indestructo Trunks" trunk has been re-purposed into a map-top coffee table. As can be seen in the interior pictures, this trunk was in very good vintage condition before the up-cycle process began.
While the trunk could be used for storage and/or decoration as it was, the beautifully distressed and rustic exterior would continue to age. At the same time, it was realized that the beautifully aged appearance deserved to be given a place of prominence out in the middle of a room or strategically located in a high traffic area for the entire family to enjoy. Hence, the decision was made to preserve the distressed and rustic appearance.
The goal was to keep the look, stop the aging, and do away with any dust particles. So, after a world map was decoupaged and cured on the trunk, the entire exterior was given several coats of polyurethane. The shine of the polyurethane further enhances the rustic and worn appearance. In addition, the aging metal trim and corners came out better than we first thought possible. The deep rustic colors alongside the cloudy to slick & shiny black exterior took on a priceless one-off appearance that is nearly impossible to duplicate. After the final coat of polyurethane was applied, the re-purposed trunk was left in our workshop to cure for over a year. While this does not have to be done, we wanted to make sure that the several coats were fully cured. Also, by preserving the exterior of this gorgeous piece with polyurethane, dust and residue are kept away and it is much easier to simply wipe off with a damp towel.
The badge shows this as trunk AB 2638. According to references, the "Insured Indestructo Trunks" company that started in the early 1900's stayed in business until the 1940's.
The hinges and closure hardware are still intact on this gorgeous re-purposed trunk. While the front lock will no longer lock with a key it still closes. The pictures show a small place on the round closure mechanism that fits into a matching receiver on the opposite side of the trunk; thereby, holding the two halves together. The small uplifted place on the round mechanism was made so that the latch could be released after being pushed into place. To open the latch simply pull out on the little bent out edge. Also, since it has been covered in polyurethane, it will open easier the more it is used.
While the trunk is being offered here as a gorgeous map-top coffee/accent table which would lay on its side, the trunk was originally designed to stand on one end where it could be opened up to access the interior drawers and hangers. The top end was designed with a slight hump - that originally had a leather handle. While the leather handle is gone, the rustic metal hardware remains.
The style of this particular trunk is more of a closet/wardrobe storage and transportation piece. As can be seen from the pictures, the original interior is still intact and in good condition - considering that it is almost a century old. In addition, the age related wear and distress on the interior of this gorgeous trunk is a testament to the quality and craftsmanship that went into this 1920's "Indestructo" trunk. While the interior is clean, the material still has age and wear. So, we recommend placing some charcoal briquettes in a bag or opening a box of baking soda just in case the aging interior has any residual odor from where it was left closed while in our storage shop.
In addition, while there are no keys to this trunk, the original locking mechanisms were left intact - see the pictures of the small key holes on the interior drawer. While it is not shown in the pictures, there is also a small locking mechanism originally thought to hold the drawers in place.
The interior has four removable drawers plus a removable storage box for a large hat. On the other side of the trunk there are two fold-out metal arms that hold wooden hangers in place. Even though the up-cycled trunk has been re-purposed as a beautiful coffee/accent table, the interior can be left intact or removed from the trunk. Intact, the side opposite the drawers can be used for storage. With the interior drawers removed, the trunk should hold more. Also, it is important to note that this trunk was designed to be a high-quality piece - to live up to its name "Indestructo". Hence, it is heavier than traditional wooden steamer trunks. This trunk is not only a tad-bit larger, but it was built to take a beating.
The decorative possibilities for this gorgeous re-purposed 1920's "Indestructo" trunk are many. The living room or den area would be enhanced by the addition of this distressed and rustic treasure. Also, the entryway or bedroom area would welcome this beautiful trunk for its nautical travel theme. In addition, this would be a great piece to use as an accent table in a loft or apartment setting mainly for its larger size. Instead of having one smaller coffee table and two end tables, it is sometimes better to incorporate a larger table out in the open while using the extra wall space for a sectional, larger sofa, or additional chair.
The collector will appreciate this gorgeous re-purposed "Indestructo" trunk for its great condition and stunning one-off distressed and rustic appearance.
This re-purposed "Indestructo" trunk to up-cycled map-top coffee table weighs approximately 92 pounds.
The map-top table/re-purposed Indestructo trunk measures 41" wide x 23.75" deep x 19.25" tall.

***Note on Measurements: All measurements are taken and described as close as possible. Where only an approximate measurement is available we will put approximately in the listing.
***Our Measurements for clothing are taken with the garment laying flat with closures fastened - zippers are zipped and buttons buttoned.
***The Bust measurement is obtained by measuring across the flat chest of the garment from armpit to armpit and then multiplying that number by two. To get the chest measurement simply divide the Bust by two.
***We clean our vintage inventory of surface dirt and dust before we list it on our site. We would not want to receive something dirty so we are not going to send our customers something with original dust or dirt. Therefore, after shipping we generally recommend all items be cleaned before use. This is not always because they are considered unclean but simply to make you aware of the possibility of needing to be cleaned after shipping and handling. This does three things: (1) It helps you know your item, (2) It helps you ensure your item is clean according to your standards, and (3) It removes any dust or grime that may have come from the shipping and delivery process.
***Unless noted in the description, we normally do not polish or repaint our inventory as many of our customers prefer the vintage patina look over a new painted or polished appearance.
***Please pay close attention to the pictures as they may show more than I may be able to explain.
***Please note that sometimes we enhance our pictures for sharpness and clarity.
***We aim to be good stewards of our planet; therefore, we may use or reuse boxes and/or packing that are clean and ship worthy.
***The year of manufacturing or year-it-was-made is an estimate based on experience, similar items, and/or appearance.
***Textiles and Fabrics such as linens, tapestries, clothing, tablecloths, or simple craft materials may be wrinkled or have lines upon arrival as they are folded for shipping. It is recommended they be laid out or hung up.
***As is common with pre-owned items they could have little marks that are not so easily detectable - we refer to these as vintage wear and rub marks. While I do personally inspect each item, I can miss small marks that may not show up with regular inside light. That being said, I try to be very picky and careful to make sure the details are explained truthfully, honestly, and upfront.
***Virtually all pre-owned items have vintage wear and rub marks. This is simply a term that we have coined to point out that because: (1) they are older, (2) most likely they are not in their original plastic, wrapping, or packaging, (3) have been stored, (4) transported, (5) and handled - they are very likely to have little, small, or slight discolorations, marks, places, wear, etc. Hence, this is why we often have longer descriptions. We try very hard to make sure you know what we know.
