Vintage Chinese Garden Stool, Blue & White Porcelain, Butterfly and Peonies, Geometric Scrollwork, Column Design, Home Decor, 15.5" Stand

$1,140.00 $1,425.00

The gorgeous blue and white Chinese porcelain garden stool is in excellent condition. This a very rare design for a Chinese garden stool. While the overall "barrel" shape is still detectable, the four-pillar open column form makes this a very unique Chinese treasure. According to references, the overwhelming majority of Chinese porcelain garden stools have fully enclosed sides that appear to be porcelain barrels. While the "garden stool" phenomenon has been very popular in recent years, the popular barrel design has been around for centuries and in essence defines the "garden stool". Hence, the rarity of the unique garden stool in this listing. Also, there are other oriental cultures that have adopted the need for a garden stool. However, the Ming-style blue on this gorgeous stool along with the motif of Peonies and butterflies are very "Chinese". In addition, the round medallion shaped piercing on the top is in the shape of an ancient Chinese coin.

There is a mark on the inside of the base. While we are yet to find the identity behind the mark, the single stroke appears to be in the form of a "9" or "6".

The geometrical scrollwork around the rim has the appearance Nazmiyal designs found on rare Chinese rugs from the eighteenth century. According to references, the four-seated design was primarily popular for locals. In other words, the four-corner geometric design was cherished by those who lived in mainland China and in particular during its earlier years the design did not find traction for nor was its production influenced by Westerners.

While most of the porcelain garden stools referenced have a height of 18", this particular garden stool stands 15.5" tall. Hence, a taller size would indicate that the stool was designed for a taller population. Likewise, the shorter height could point toward an earlier date when populations were not as tall as they are in the present day.

The open column four-pillar design appears to be important in Chinese culture. According to references, the Yin and Yang symbol stands for and/or portrays balance. The four-pillar construction could have its significance in the Yin Yang Yuan Quadrant of the Chinese. For example, Summer, Spring, Winter, and Fall along with Father, Son, Mather, and Daughter are all pictures of balance. In particular, the Yin Yang Yuan Quadrant focuses more on things concerned with being out-of-doors in the elements with harmonious fellowship with family. Hence, the porcelain garden stool made to withstand weather and seasons.

While finding a particular date for the production of this beautiful Chinese porcelain garden stool is very difficult, the unique design and and shape seem to point toward pre-WWII. However, this is only an approximate time-frame. The singular mark, ethnically popular scrollwork, Ancient coin-shaped piercing on the top, and the open column four-pillar design give this particular garden stool a somewhat heavier "Chinese" flavor.

There are no breaks, cracks, chips, or repair places on this gorgeous Chinese porcelain garden stool. There are some vintage wear, age, and rub places on this beautiful garden stool/plant stand - mainly some slight wear on the top due to use and rub places on the bottom from where it has touched different surfaces. There are some inconsistencies in the coloring where a faded blue can be seen under the glaze. Also, the top is not perfectly level which is a very good sign that the hands of an artisan were involved in the making of this gorgeous Chinese garden stool. In addition, the base is approximately 1/8" wider across in one direction versus the other. Overall, considering the size, weight, and exquisite artisan-ship found on this garden stool, it is truly amazing that so many elements can be controlled and brought together to make such a gorgeous piece.

The decorative possibilities for this beautiful porcelain garden stool are many. While it may be desirable to employ this rare Chinese stool as a piece of furniture, there are many other ways to appreciate and enjoy this gorgeous Chinese treasure. The entryway or living area would be enhanced by the addition of this gorgeous garden stool as a stand-alone decorative statue or as a plant stand from which a deep green vine can hang. Also, the raised hearth or ceramic tile counter top in a master bath would welcome the beautiful blue and white colors to break up dominant earth tones. In addition, this gorgeous porcelain treasure would make a perfect accent table to display in a tight corner or beside an over-sized sofa. If the desire is for a piece of furniture, this would make a great vanity seat. The round foot of the open base would be much easier to place over carpet and/or cause less harm to tile or wood floors.

The collector will appreciate this gorgeous Chinese porcelain garden stool for its excellent condition, stunning blue and white colors, and unique overall design.

The gorgeous blue and white Chinese porcelain garden stool weighs 280.9 oz.

The highly detailed round oriental garden stool/plant stand measures approximately 15.5" tall x approximately 10" wide across the girth - the widest part of the stool.

The gorgeous porcelain stool measures 9.75" wide across the top from outside to outside x 8 3/8" wide across the bottom in one direction and 8.25" wide across the bottom in the other.

***Note on Measurements: All measurements are taken and described as close as possible. Where only an approximate measurement is available we will put approximately in the listing.

***Our Measurements for clothing are taken with the garment laying flat with closures fastened - zippers are zipped and buttons buttoned.

***The Bust measurement is obtained by measuring across the flat chest of the garment from armpit to armpit and then multiplying that number by two. To get the chest measurement simply divide the Bust by two.

***We clean our vintage inventory of surface dirt and dust before we list it on our site. We would not want to receive something dirty so we are not going to send our customers something with original dust or dirt. Therefore, after shipping we generally recommend all items be cleaned before use. This is not always because they are considered unclean but simply to make you aware of the possibility of needing to be cleaned after shipping and handling. This does three things: (1) It helps you know your item, (2) It helps you ensure your item is clean according to your standards, and (3) It removes any dust or grime that may have come from the shipping and delivery process.

***Unless noted in the description, we normally do not polish or repaint our inventory as many of our customers prefer the vintage patina look over a new painted or polished appearance.

***Please pay close attention to the pictures as they may show more than I may be able to explain.

***Please note that sometimes we enhance our pictures for sharpness and clarity.

***We aim to be good stewards of our planet; therefore, we may use or reuse boxes and/or packing that are clean and ship worthy.

***The year of manufacturing or year-it-was-made is an estimate based on experience, similar items, and/or appearance.

***Textiles and Fabrics such as linens, tapestries, clothing, tablecloths, or simple craft materials may be wrinkled or have lines upon arrival as they are folded for shipping. It is recommended they be laid out or hung up.

***As is common with pre-owned items they could have little marks that are not so easily detectable - we refer to these as vintage wear and rub marks. While I do personally inspect each item, I can miss small marks that may not show up with regular inside light. That being said, I try to be very picky and careful to make sure the details are explained truthfully, honestly, and upfront.

***Virtually all pre-owned items have vintage wear and rub marks. This is simply a term that we have coined to point out that because: (1) they are older, (2) most likely they are not in their original plastic, wrapping, or packaging, (3) have been stored, (4) transported, (5) and handled - they are very likely to have little, small, or slight discolorations, marks, places, wear, etc. Hence, this is why we often have longer descriptions. We try very hard to make sure you know what we know.
