The antique wooden rocking chair is in very good condition. This chair came from an antique collector who had originally received this gorgeous old rocker as a gift from a family member in 1979 - the note is still attached to the bottom of the rocker . The particular "armless" style of this chair is purposeful. This rocking chair is referred to as a diaper rocker. A mother would use this chair to care for her newborn baby as it was easy to maneuver in due to the lack of arms.
As the pictures reveal, this antique rocking chair was has the appearance of pre-machine built construction - woodworkers used hand-tools. For example, the back of the chair reveals a few things about the construction of this gorgeous old rocking chair. First, it was built to be functional. The quarter-sawn oak and maple wood construction give this particular chair a very strong frame. The lines running across the grain of the headrest are consistent with quarter-sawn oak. Second, the chair was built to have a nice appearance as can be seen in the carved headrest. The carving appears to be either stars of flowers. Finally, the joints and embedded square nuts reveal a primitive style of construction. However, the bentwood sides of the carved harp-shaped back are somewhat more consistent with the Victorian era than Arts & Crafts or Shaker Period furniture. Furthermore, it is very possible that pieces of furniture built with a specific purpose in mind would be influenced from different eras - especially since the piece was to be used instead of made for resale.
The age of this gorgeous antique diaper rocker is evident is the wear and rub marks on the exterior of the chair. Also, the aging of the wood is evident as the picture of the bottom reveals a nail driven beside a steel wedge to help hold the back dowels-style post in position. The back posts have a little play in them - mostly the one with the nail. Even more so, it is important to remember that antiques in particular should not be carelessly handled. While this chair can be used, it is more of an antique collectible than a daily rocking chair.
The decorative possibilities for this gorgeous antique rocking chair are many. The "armless" construction allows this chair to work in smaller spaces. The entryway or living area would welcome the addition of this gorgeous antique diaper chair. Also, the den or bedroom would welcome this primitive yet stylish wooden rocker for its warm and welcoming appearance. In addition, this would be a very nice rocker to showcase from a raised hearth or in a step-down den with an old quilt or afghan across the top.
The collector will appreciate this gorgeous antique rocking chair for its very good condition and uniquely purposeful construction - a diaper chair.

***Note on Measurements: All measurements are taken and described as close as possible. Where only an approximate measurement is available we will put approximately in the listing.
***Our Measurements for clothing are taken with the garment laying flat with closures fastened - zippers are zipped and buttons buttoned.
***The Bust measurement is obtained by measuring across the flat chest of the garment from armpit to armpit and then multiplying that number by two. To get the chest measurement simply divide the Bust by two.
***We clean our vintage inventory of surface dirt and dust before we list it on our site. We would not want to receive something dirty so we are not going to send our customers something with original dust or dirt. Therefore, after shipping we generally recommend all items be cleaned before use. This is not always because they are considered unclean but simply to make you aware of the possibility of needing to be cleaned after shipping and handling. This does three things: (1) It helps you know your item, (2) It helps you ensure your item is clean according to your standards, and (3) It removes any dust or grime that may have come from the shipping and delivery process.
***Unless noted in the description, we normally do not polish or repaint our inventory as many of our customers prefer the vintage patina look over a new painted or polished appearance.
***Please pay close attention to the pictures as they may show more than I may be able to explain.
***Please note that sometimes we enhance our pictures for sharpness and clarity.
***We aim to be good stewards of our planet; therefore, we may use or reuse boxes and/or packing that are clean and ship worthy.
***The year of production or year-it-was-made is an estimate based on experience, similar items, and/or appearance.
***Textiles and Fabrics such as linens, tapestries, clothing, tablecloths, or simple craft materials may be wrinkled or have lines upon arrival as they are folded for shipping. It is recommended they be laid out or hung up.
***As is common with pre-owned items they could have little marks that are not so easily detectable - we refer to these as vintage wear and rub marks. While I do personally inspect each item, I can miss small marks that may not show up with regular inside light. That being said, I try to be very picky and careful to make sure the details are explained truthfully, honestly, and upfront.
***Virtually all pre-owned items have vintage wear and rub marks. This is simply a term that we have coined to point out that because: (1) they are older, (2) most likely they are not in their original plastic, wrapping, or packaging, (3) have been stored, (4) transported, (5) and handled - they are very likely to have little, small, or slight discolorations, marks, places, wear, etc. Hence, this is why we often have longer descriptions. We try very hard to make sure you know what we know.
