The two gorgeous wooden barrel-back captains chairs are in very good to great condition. In this case, the condition for these worn, distressed, and rustic captains chairs has more to do with their actual build and sturdiness as opposed to their particular cosmetic appearance. The distressed and rustic worn appearance of these captains chairs is practically impossible to duplicate. The mahogany appearance of the wood is simply referring to the particular stain. According to a reference, the maker of these chairs were known for their walnut furniture. However, it is simply hard to be certain on the type of wood these chairs are made from. The chairs appear to be a bit heavier than other barrel-back chairs of the same size.

The tag on the underside of one of the chairs shows them to have been produced by the Empire State Chair Company of New York. In our experience, the production of most older items from locations near or in New York have a reputation of being made of a much higher quality. There is also a faint "1969" stamp on the underside of one of the chairs.

The gorgeous tufted black appearance of these chairs appears to be very rare for chairs of this style. The black material covering the padded armrests, back, and seat area appears to be a heavier quality vinyl-like material. The quality of the black material is no-doubt why they are still in very good condition nearly fifty years later. The tufted black material is held in place by metal studs. The metal studs have a very unique rusty appearance giving these gorgeous chairs a seriously dated presence.

The mahogany appearance of the wood is accented with years of wear and use. As the pictures reveal, the wood not only has a distressed appearance but it also has a used grunge-like look. Giving the high-quality and sturdy build of these beautiful barrel back captains chairs, it is safe to say that they wee most likely made for a lounge-bar-saloon type location. The underside of the ends of the armrests still have the aged dusty look from where patrons raised up from the seat by pushing on the ends of the armrests.

There is a crack in the tufted black material on the back of one of the chairs and some other smaller wear places on the black material. Other than this, there are no breaks, crack, or repair places on these gorgeous distressed and rustic captains chairs. There are vintage wear, age, and rub marks on these gorgeous wooden captains chairs.

The decorative possibilities for these gorgeous wooden barrel-back captains chairs are many. The living room or man-cave would be enhanced by the addition of these gorgeous tufted black barrel-back chairs. Also, the unique distressed and rustic appearance of these Empire State Chair Company chairs make them a great choice for an area that needs additional seating on special occasions such as dining rooms or a larger entryway area. In addition, the vanity and bedroom would welcome these gorgeous chairs for their country-western saloon-style appearance. When it comes to older pieces of furniture, it is easier to go beyond the constant pressures of making every decorative detail match the other.

The collector will appreciate these two distressed and worn wooden barrel-back chairs for their very good to great condition and their uniquely aged and used appearance.

Each of these gorgeous rustic and distressed wooden barrel-back captains chairs weigh approximately 23.5 pounds each.

Each wooden barrel back captains chair measures approximately 30.5" tall to the top of the back and 27.5" tall to the top of the padded armrests.

The seat height of each chair measures 17.5" tall.

The depth of the seat on each chair measures 17 1/8" deep from the front edge back to front of the middle spindle.

The total depth of the chair from the front edge of the seat back to the back of the chair measures approximately 22".

Each chair measures approximately 24.25" wide from outside of arm to outside of arm and 18.75" wide from inside of arm to inside of arm.

The chair with the tag on the bottom measures 20.5" wide in the front from outside of leg to outside of leg and 19.5" wide in the back from outside of leg to outside of leg.

The chair without the tag on the bottom measures 21.75" wide in the front from outside of leg to outside of leg and 18.75" wide in the back from outside of leg to outside of leg.

The distance from the front edge of the front leg to the back edge of the back leg measures approximately 18 1/8" - measured from the ends.

***Note on Measurements: All measurements are taken and described as close as possible. Where only an approximate measurement is available we will put approximately in the listing.

***Our Measurements for clothing are taken with the garment laying flat with closures fastened - zippers are zipped and buttons buttoned.

***The Bust measurement is obtained by measuring across the flat chest of the garment from armpit to armpit and then multiplying that number by two. To get the chest measurement simply divide the Bust by two.

***We clean our vintage inventory of surface dirt and dust before we list it on our site. We would not want to receive something dirty so we are not going to send our customers something with original dust or dirt. Therefore, after shipping we generally recommend all items be cleaned before use. This is not always because they are considered unclean but simply to make you aware of the possibility of needing to be cleaned after shipping and handling. This does three things: (1) It helps you know your item, (2) It helps you ensure your item is clean according to your standards, and (3) It removes any dust or grime that may have come from the shipping and delivery process.

***Unless noted in the description, we normally do not polish or repaint our inventory as many of our customers prefer the vintage patina look over a new painted or polished appearance.

***Please pay close attention to the pictures as they may show more than I may be able to explain.

***Please note that sometimes we enhance our pictures for sharpness and clarity.

***We aim to be good stewards of our planet; therefore, we may use or reuse boxes and/or packing that are clean and ship worthy.

***The year of production or year-it-was-made is an estimate based on experience, similar items, and/or appearance.

***Textiles and Fabrics such as linens, tapestries, clothing, tablecloths, or simple craft materials may be wrinkled or have lines upon arrival as they are folded for shipping. It is recommended they be laid out or hung up.

***As is common with pre-owned items they could have little marks that are not so easily detectable - we refer to these as vintage wear and rub marks. While I do personally inspect each item, I can miss small marks that may not show up with regular inside light. That being said, I try to be very picky and careful to make sure the details are explained truthfully, honestly, and upfront.

***Virtually all pre-owned items have vintage wear and rub marks. This is simply a term that we have coined to point out that because: (1) they are older, (2) most likely they are not in their original plastic, wrapping, or packaging, (3) have been stored, (4) transported, (5) and handled - they are very likely to have little, small, or slight discolorations, marks, places, wear, etc. Hence, this is why we often have longer descriptions. We try very hard to make sure you know what we know.
