The oval portrait painting by Ken F Riley 1953 is in very good condition. The bottom of the frame has a gold badge that says, "Joseph Riley V 09-03-1834 to 03-02-1912". The mystery here lies with the contrasting dates. If Joseph Riley V passed on in 1912, why is his very life-like portrait dated in 1953? The best solution might be found in that the artist was family to Joseph Riley V. Since he was family, he had the opportunity to do a much greater tribute to the memory of his relative. In essence, the portrait was done from the memory of the artist as opposed to having his subject before him. Furthermore, it is highly likely this particular work is a mix of a much older previous picture/painting and an updated 1953 addition to that older original.
At first thought, it might sound odd to consider purchasing a portrait of a rather unknown individual. However, there is no doubt that the masterpieces of the past were purchased or changed hands in much the same way. This is art. More particularly, this is older portrait style art that has a very realistic - almost picture-like appearance.
It may be of importance to note that the black and white colors along with the distinct design of the beard, face, and hair appear to be very similar to portraits of Abraham Lincoln.
The metal wire for hanging this gorgeous vintage portrait on the wall is already installed on the back.
The slightly distressed gold colored frame appears to be made from plaster or chalk. There are some places where the frame has hairline cracks or small chips that reveal the white base color. The little cracks are not all the way through and appear to simply be surface places - mainly due to age. Also, this can sometimes be consistent with plaster and chalk pieces.
Under magnification, the strokes of the painter's brush are much more obvious. While it is hard to tell exactly the type of paint that was used to create this oval portrait, it appears to be consistent with oil. The pictures show the heavier shades of black used to make the hair stand out. Also, the little white glisten of the eyes with its surrounding colors give the portrait a realistic mirror-like appearance. Hence, the artist was very good at bringing color and canvas alive.
The inside of the glass has some cloudiness and a little area where it had once sweated. The portrait was not hurt but the tiny spots can be seen by slowly turning the frame in the light.
Besides the places mentioned above, there are no breaks, or repair places on this gorgeous oval portrait by Ken F. Riley in 1953. There are some vintage wear and rub places. The gorgeous gold frame has a slightly distressed appearance.
The decorative opportunities for this oval portrait by Ken F. Riley are many. The entryway or living room area wall would welcome the addition of this gorgeous oval portrait. Also, the study or hallway wall would be enhanced by this very realistic painting.
The collector will appreciate this gorgeous distressed oval portrait for its very good condition, apparent age, and realistic appearance.
The oval painted portrait weighs approximately 71 oz.
The oval wall-hanging portrait measures 22.75" tall x 16 7/8" wide x 1 1/8" thick.

***Note on Measurements: All measurements are taken and described as close as possible. Where only an approximate measurement is available we will put approximately in the listing.
***Our Measurements for clothing are taken with the garment laying flat with closures fastened - zippers are zipped and buttons buttoned.
***The Bust measurement is obtained by measuring across the flat chest of the garment from armpit to armpit and then multiplying that number by two. To get the chest measurement simply divide the Bust by two.
***We clean our vintage inventory of surface dirt and dust before we list it on our site. We would not want to receive something dirty so we are not going to send our customers something with original dust or dirt. However please note that after shipping we recommend all items be cleaned thoroughly before use. This does three things: (1) It helps you know your item, (2) It helps you ensure your item is clean according to your standards, and (3) It removes any dust or grime that may have come from the shipping and delivery process.
***Unless noted in the description, we normally do not polish or repaint our inventory as many of our customers prefer the vintage patina look over a new painted or polished appearance.
***Please pay close attention to the pictures as they may show more than I may be able to explain.
***Please note that sometimes we enhance our pictures for sharpness and clarity.
***We aim to be good stewards of our planet; therefore, we may use or reuse boxes and/or packing that are clean and ship worthy.
***The year of manufacturing or year-it-was-made is an estimate based on experience, similar items, and/or appearance.
***Textiles and Fabrics such as linens, tapestries, clothing, tablecloths, or simple craft materials may be wrinkled or have lines upon arrival as they are folded for shipping. It is recommended they be laid out or hung up.
***As is common with pre-owned items they could have little marks that are not so easily detectable - we refer to these as vintage wear and rub marks. While I do personally inspect each item, I can miss small marks that may not show up with a regular inside light. That being said, I try to be very picky and careful to make sure the details are explained truthfully, honestly, and upfront.
***Virtually all pre-owned items have vintage wear and rub marks. This is simply a term that we have coined to point out that because: (1) they are older, (2) most likely they are not in their original plastic, wrapping, or packaging, (3) have been stored, (4) transported, (5) and handled - they are very likely to have little, small, or slight discolorations, marks, places, wear, etc. Hence, this is why we often have longer descriptions. We try very hard to make sure you know what we know.
