The antique 1800's split-oak farmhouse harvest basket is in good condition considering its age. This basket is very old and very well made. The basket can still be picked up and carried around the house or it can be loaded with towels, bedsheets, and other items. However, given the age and rarity of this basket, it might be much more desirable to show off this beautiful antique treasure as a decorative collectible.

The story behind this basket:

This basket came from the estate of a University Art Teacher. The family noted that she was very particular and had a keen eye for older art and collectibles. The lady was also an artist with some of her works on display in the home. However, this particular basket came down as a family heirloom and supposedly was not acquired as a collectible.

The bottom of this basket is unique in that it is framed in with what is commonly referred to as wooden tobacco sticks. They are approximately 1" x 1" solid wood sticks with corners that appear to have been rounded off by hand. Also, the splint-wood bottom is much wider than that of the sides which may indicate that this basket was originally designed for smaller items that were prone to be caught in the smaller splint-wood material or might have dirt if they were just recently harvested - beans and potatoes might be great examples. Combining the sturdy construction with the rolled bent wood handles gives the impression this basket hauled something that may have been significantly heavier than laundry. Most likely this basket was originally designed to haul produce from the fields.

Since there are no dates or company markings on this gorgeous old farmhouse harvesting basket, it is hard to be dogmatic about a particular date. However, given the provided reasons, it is highly likely that this basket was made sometime in the 1800's.

Our reasons are as follows:

1. The shape of the shanks are rectangular - this can mainly be seen on their ends as many are curled over after coming through the wood.

2. The dark oxidation around the hole and on the surface of the nails is much more consistent with black rust as opposed to the brownish red rust of modern nails. Black rust does not flake and actually acts as a preservative on the metal.

3. The heads of the nails in this basket are not uniform - this is hardly noticeable unless under magnification.

4. Some of the nail heads have straighter sides with rounded portions in between (for example straighter on top and bottom and more rounded on ends) - the rounded parts of the heads appear to be attempted and not uniform.

5. The construction and appearance of this large antique farmhouse laundry basket match other baskets supposedly coming out of the 19th century.

6. The rolled and bent handles are consistent with baskets from the 19th century.

7. The splint-wood material - especially around the top - gives evidence of where it was peeled or split from another piece for the construction of this gorgeous farmhouse basket.

The antique split-oak farmhouse basket has some places where the end of the material has broken off or has simply split under stress. In addition, there is a double wrapped corner where the outside material is split but the inside is together. In this little section, a couple of the nails are a little loose. Also, there are some places where the splint-wood is missing leaving little open blocks - see the pictures. But, there are no missing places or gaps in the bottom material. There is a small penciled in name "TESS" on one side and a couple of little numbers in one place in the bottom - most likely these are measurements. The name was most likely added after the construction of the basket.

The remnants of previous contents found in this basket indicate it was either used for hauling cotton or as a laundry basket. Whichever, given the size, depth, and reinforced construction of this gorgeous antique basket, it was most likely carried by two people. Under a light or up in the light, there are some little pieces of thread that may show in between the split oak material - mainly on the bottom and near the corners.

The decorative possibilities for this antique primitive farmhouse harvest/laundry basket are many. The entryway or study wall would be enhanced by the addition of this gorgeous antique treasure. In addition, a location high above the kitchen cabinets might be a perfect and preferred location to display this large split oak beauty. Also, the hearth area would welcome this beautiful antique farmhouse basket. This basket would also make a gorgeous overhead light box for a kitchen or bath area.

The collector will appreciate this gorgeous antique 1800's harvest basket for its good overall condition and sturdy design.

The antique 19th Century split-oak farmhouse harvest/laundry basket weighs approximately 5 pounds,

The beautiful farmhouse decoration measures 18.5" wide x approximately 12.5" tall to the top of the rim on the basket x 29.5" not including the handles.

The basket measures 30.5" in length including the handles and stands 14" tall to the top of the handles.

***Note on Measurements: All measurements are taken and described as close as possible. Where only an approximate measurement is available we will put approximately in the listing.

***Our Measurements for clothing are taken with the garment laying flat with closures fastened - zippers are zipped and buttons buttoned.

***The Bust measurement is obtained by measuring across the flat chest of the garment from armpit to armpit and then multiplying that number by two. To get the chest measurement simply divide the Bust by two.

***We clean our vintage inventory of surface dirt and dust before we list it on our site. We would not want to receive something dirty so we are not going to send our customers something with original dust or dirt. However please note that after shipping we recommend all items be cleaned thoroughly before use. This does three things: (1) It helps you know your item, (2) It helps you ensure your item is clean according to your standards, and (3) It removes any dust or grime that may have come from the shipping and delivery process.

***Unless noted in the description, we normally do not polish or repaint our inventory as many of our customers prefer the vintage patina look over a new painted or polished appearance.

***Please pay close attention to the pictures as they may show more than I may be able to explain.

***Please note that sometimes we enhance our pictures for sharpness and clarity.

***We aim to be good stewards of our planet; therefore, we may use or reuse boxes and/or packing that are clean and ship worthy.

***The year of manufacturing or year-it-was-made is an estimate based on experience, similar items, and/or appearance.

***Textiles and Fabrics such as linens, tapestries, clothing, tablecloths, or simple craft materials may be wrinkled or have lines upon arrival as they are folded for shipping. It is recommended they be laid out or hung up.

***As is common with pre-owned items they could have little marks that are not so easily detectable - we refer to these as vintage wear and rub marks. While I do personally inspect each item, I can miss small marks that may not show up with a regular inside light. That being said, I try to be very picky and careful to make sure the details are explained truthfully, honestly, and upfront.

***Virtually all pre-owned items have vintage wear and rub marks. This is simply a term that we have coined to point out that because: (1) they are older, (2) most likely they are not in their original plastic, wrapping, or packaging, (3) have been stored, (4) transported, (5) and handled - they are very likely to have little, small, or slight discolorations, marks, places, wear, etc. Hence, this is why we often have longer descriptions. We try very hard to make sure you know what we know.
