The white wooden box is in great working condition. However, it is important to note that when it comes to old distressed pieces, condition is more of preference and certainly subjective.
The box does not have any bad odors or water damages. The box does have vintage wear and rub places. The paint has a couple places that appear to have been rubbed while it was still wet - a very long time ago. We did not tidy up, touch up, or add any paint to make this box look better for pictures.
For example, this box appears to be very old. It has an old bottom covering often found in trunks of the late 1800’s. The style, color, and even the application of the material appear to be very representative of older pieces. But, the bottom covering would not be considered as part of a “great condition” piece on a non-distressed item and possibly even pre-owned.
The slightly distressed appearance of this box is from age and wear. Also, the material on the bottom is similar to that found on old cigar boxes and possibly humidors. The wood grain is also consistent with mahogany. Hence, it is highly like this was an old cigar box from the Art Deco period. In addition, when a box has a material other than wood on the bottom, it is a great indicator that it was meant to be placed in a location where it was possible the surface might be scratched. Hence, this box may have been a piece used in a study, parlor or other living areas.
The box is in great condition with a preference for an older slightly distressed finger-joined box with what appears to be a hand-carved floral theme on the lid.
The box has finger-joined construction on all four corners - including a finger-joined lid which would also be more consistent with older pieces. In comparison, many vintage to newer pieces have the front corners finger-joined while the back corners are simply glued or tacked together. There are exceptions but from our experience, this is what we have seen.
On top of this evidence, when we observe the way the top is slightly concave toward the center along with the surrounding stress lines it becomes obvious this box has seen many birthdays.
Also, we have considered the interesting ribbed sides along with the rounded edges on the bottom and top. They give this box more of an Art Deco style - even reminiscent of early to mid-1900’s pieces. This is another evidence for an earlier 1900’s piece.
The white color, on the other hand, was applied after that. It is hard to say for sure since both the box and color have wear. Most likely the color was not applied to look fancy but to fulfill a simple desire - make that old wooden box look more modern. Even today, applying paint to old pieces of wood is still a common practice.
So, this slightly distressed wooden box is certainly a rarity in both design and appearance.
The inside is very clean. Also, it does not appear that felt or paper was ever inside the box. There are no glue remnants or nasty stains.
The box does not have a lock. The hinges along with the rims of both the lid and bottom section have white remnants from where the box was painted. Hence, giving the box a modern primitive distressed appearance.
Concerning the older finger-joined construction, it must be noted that it is still holding together very well. It is possible that finger-joined construction will move a little if considerable pressure is applied, many older drawers will move in the same manner. All that to say that the box is holding together very well.
Concerning the carving on the top of the lid, it appears to be hand-carved. One of the reasons we point this out is because there are some subtle inconsistencies in the work - that are probably too small for a mechanized router or saw. Case in point - the tips of the leaves in the carving are a little different. Some appear sharper than the fatter ones. Also, the middle right leaf, in particular, has what appears to be a slip or run with the carving tool. However, this is not for sure but simply our best opinion. Finally, the carving itself is very similar to a relief. The different levels of the flower can actually be seen and felt.
The decorative possibilities for this old box are many. The vanity area would certainly welcome this beautiful distressed box. On the other end of the house, the entryway would be greatly enhanced with the addition of this piece. There is no telling how many conversations will be started over this old box.
The collector will appreciate this box for its apparent age and Art Deco styling.
The box weighs 31.6 oz.
The box measures 12.5” wide x 8” deep x 3 7/8” tall to the top of the lid and 2.5” tall to the top of the rim of the bottom section.
